1997 4.6 developed a severe misfire with a flashing MIL, Edge programmer indicated misfire on cylinder one. Pulled the plug wire, put a plug in her and she sparked good. Pulled the plug out of the motor and the business end was covered in wet oil. Now what? Not mixing coolant and oil, not losing any coolant, just have a cylinder with a lot of oil flying around........

Rings or valve guides & seals.

There is a tool that screws in place of a spark plug. Put that cylinder at tdc and apply shop air. If it is rings you will hear it in the pcv / crankcase vent. If not then it will be the valves, guides and seals.

Also blue smoke at first run in the morning will indicate valve seals.
