So, here's my question. I've never engaged 4 low or the ELSD. In theory, I'd shouldn't have a problem. Should I go out into the desert and engage both and see what happens? So if it blows up, it blows up? Or should I go with "let sleeping dogs lie"? This is a very odd situation.

I think there are a lot of times that the eLSD engages besides locker mode. I have a 2wd and it definitely engaged while I was playing in the mud.

I wish I knew which CAN message told the eLSD to engage. I could record in different situations to see how often it engages. The differential is on the HS1 CAN port and the 4x4 switch is on the HS2 CAN port. They are both available at the OBDII port.

I try to use the locker and the 4L once a month just to keep everything lubed and prevent actuators from sticking. Toyota has recommendations about this in the user manual.

I have a 2019 4WD with 21,500 miles having the same issue. Rear differential binding while turning at slow speeds. It’s been in the shop for two weeks and so far Ford has authorized the dealer to do an oil analysis (first week) and today they were told to replace the HCU which will be shipped in next week. The service tech agrees with me and thinks it’s a problem with the clutch assembly but explained they can only perform the steps authorized by Ford. Process of elimination or paralysis by analysis ‍:favorites68:

Did the dealer provide you with a comparable loaner vehicle since they cannot fix the vehicle in a timely manner?

It’ll be interesting to see how all this pans out. Hope it’s not wide spread. Of note, I used my 4Auto mode at least monthly on my hunting club, pulling my boat trailer up the ramp. Etc. also put it into 4 Lo monthly.

That has nothing to do with engaging the locker thats failing..... Using the locker could be good medicine, but its in oil, I wouldn't think it should sieze up.

I finally got my 2019 back and so far so good. Rear differential was removed and disassembled for inspection (no issues found) and reinstalled. Ford then replaced the HCU and it seems to have fixed the binding problem. Hopefully this resolves the issue.

I’m joining the club late here…. My 19 is doing the same thing. Does anyone have the invoice with a parts list of what was replaced? Looking online I think I could get away with just doing the carrier. I’m also thinking about grabbing a salvage one.. any thoughts?

Just an update, I ended up purchasing a salvage one to swap in and keep my truck on the road. So far no noise, I did notice the HCU on top has been updated to a newer style. I plan on opening up my differential this week to see what’s damaged and if I can get away with just replacing the actuator.IMG_3462.jpeg

My 2019 makes a grind occasionally when I turn backing up. But it never does it if I turn off traction control. So there may be a connection there to my noise.

Hopefully it’s just a traction issue! The differential issue for me was in both directions when turning. I’m guessing I had the problem for a long time now because it feels like a different truck now that it’s so quiet.

2020 Expedition Platinum w/towing package currently in for the 4th time on issue where there is binding in rear differential; initally thought it was transmission related even after having the transmission valve body replaced in February. Took in back in March, they couldn't replicate, got progressively worse over time, initally binding in the rear at low speeds when turning slightly going up hill, then at higher speeds with tighter radius (highway on/off ramp). Dealer diagnosed under TSB 24-2188, overhaulled transfer case; issue was still there when I picked up, take back for shop operations manager test drive, commits to put their best tech on it and then goes on holidays. Now back in and they have ordered parts for front differential.....don't appear to have even looked at rear differential. Symptoms can be immediatey triggered when drive selector is put in SAND mode. Mentioned HCU as possible problem from earlier posts on this thread and their eyes glaze over.

Hey downen, sorry for the late reply. How did you make out with the front differential? Mine was 100% the rear. If someone was standing outside watching the rear end while making a tight radius turn on a incline you could visually see the rear wheel ratcheting and hearing the clicks as if the rear end was trying to lock up. Still haven't gotten around to opening mine up yet.

Hey, since you can see things better, is it possible to change the hydraulic pump oil with the diff in the car??

THIS is EXACTLY what failed on mine. These "PINS" were trying to engage when they weren't supposed to and they were jumping in and out of their slots and making a chattering sensation. When they pulled it apart these pins were all chewed up from trying to engage all the time and then jumping out of the holes and wearing away the ends of the pins. "Ford" supposedly doesn't KNOW what causes this, so they just instructed my dealer to replace the entire guts of the rear end. The hydraulic pump and actuator are lubricated with transmission fluid, so luckily the hydraulic pump wasn't contaminated with the metal shavings. Hopefully this fixes it.
I am also getting the same problem. What solution did you find for this?
