Anyone ever venture into seeing if the rear power lift gate can open higher?

Feel like I saw a adjustment procedure written up not too long ago. Mine is opening lower since it’s last trip to the dealer...I will investigate. The wife complained about it the other day.

My wife's 12 Explorer allowed me to adjust its height. I used to smack my head on it. All I had to do was lift it to the position I needed then hold the button down until you hear it beep. Its learned. Don't know if the Expedition is any different

because im tall and I hate hitting my head on it. Even after lifting it I still hit it, maybe after I add another inch from tires Ill be good but thought id ask. It would be nice to adjust, or add aftermarket gas shocks or mod the power opening arm to over stroke it an inch or two. Just thought Id ask the question before I go and reinvent the wheel.

Every time I read one of these "power whatever" threads (sunroof, running boards, suspension, rear gate, rear glass), I like my bare bones SSV a little more, lol!

Mine doesn't have a power rear gate and I can stand under it with head room to spare. I'm 6'4"... so there's definitely room to spare under yours, OP.


Sometimes (most times) the K.I.S.S. principle works best!

Yea in this case I would agree. I do like the convenience of it, however its mediocre at best from all of the power lift gates ive used. I am fairly certain its the power actuator that is limiting its travel but honestly haven't dug into it too much.

I also find it humorous that the pull down strap/handle is still there on the powered version.

Well, I'd assume the thing would have a manual override in case the "suburban princess mode" fails... hence the pull down strap.

I've never used the pull down strap on any of my trucks, the Expedition included. I just grab the the edge of the gate when it's open and slam it down, like a man! Show the truck who's boss and scare all the pensioners / Justin Trudeau supporters in the mall parking lot at the same time! Hahaha!


(seriously, I don't slam it that much. It's bad for the electric lock actuator in the gate... I busted it twice on my Explorer!)

I love my power liftgate. Nice to walk up to the truck, hit the fob and have it ready to accept my heavy bags of wood chips, groceries, whatever. Absolutely love this feature. Nothing wrong with it. Get a 2.5 lift on your truck. Problem solved.

I did see a KR expedition in a grocer parking lot this summer as I pulled into a nearby spot. As I was looking it over, the liftgate starts to open as a family is approaching from the store exit. As the liftgate opens a Watermellow proceeds to roll out and smack into the lot surface.

I looked up cargo nets on Amazon that day.

I have no problem with the height of the lift gate. I'm 6'0" and can stand under it with no problem. However, I'd like to add some more height to the glass. If thats open by itself I cant stand under neath it...and the latch protrudes down even further! I've been meaning to find struts made for a different vehicle that are a few inches longer as that should fix the issue. Problem is that they dont seem to label the length of the struts so I'm not sure how to find what I need!

I yell at the Mrs when she slams my door. She's so rough with the doors on her Mazda that she bent the fender on the driver side from flinging the door open so hard.

The automatic lift gate was clearly an after thought on these vehicles. They are faster and smoother on every other vehicle. Not enough to complain about though. I hope strut/shock spacers are enough to reduce my need to duck under it, however I'll have a new issue of getting my 90lbs labs in and out. Probably going to need a ramp or ladder...
