Just received a recall notice for the windshield wipers. This letter stated in part that I would be notified when Fords part supplier makes the parts available I would be notified to bring it to a dealer for repair. This, they say will be sometime in the second quarter. What struck me is Ford has been saying a chip problem has been delaying delivery of new Expy's. Based on this letter it is a hell of a lot more imho.

You are correct, it is not only 'chips' or wiper motors. It is everything. The supply chain is brutal. Hopefully, this will be a lesson for our manufacturers. There is so much sourced from the "far east", and it is crippling us. This isn't the first time, back in 2011-2012 when the Tsunami hit Japan, our 2012 Explorer, which we ordered, was put on commodity hold because of PAINT!! It was ordered as Kona Blue, but the pigments and pearl flakes were sourced out of Japan, but it could not be produced because of the issues with Japan and the Tsunami. Luckily, it was only paint, and we were told that it would be painted in an order color, Dark Blue Pearl, which ironically was the color of the vehicle that we were trading in.

Hopefully, this has taught our North American companies a lesson. The downside to moving domestic, even that we can, is cost. We're already paying a premium on these 2022's because there's a shortage of them and the dealers are selling at MSRP or higher. I never paid MSRP, BUT I guess I'm okay with paying that if I could purchase/order a vehicle with ALL OF THE FEATURES, and have it built and delivered in a reasonable amount of time.

The wipers are nothing... Think about the ones that can randomly catch on fire. Mine has both recalls.

Wow - good luck.

The wiper safety recall has no parts available to fix the defect.

The recent fire-possibility safety recall has no solution to fix the defect.

Remember when safety recalls meant the manufacturer actually repaired the potential defect for the customer?

Yep this really stinks. Ford has shit the bed big time on this one. I will think twice before buying another one.

Yea, what a wonderful experience Ford is giving us, huh? I love paying all that $$$ every month for a vehicle that could burst into flames ar any time. I'm going to give them about a month more of this nonsense (no fix) and then I'm going to either sell it or trade it in. The new Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon look fantastic.

LOL, my 2012 GT500 is Kona Blue. I ordered it in February, 2011. It was scheduled to be built the first week of May 2011. You know the story. I had a friend in Flat Rock following the order for me. He called me and explained the pigment situation. Since the entire order book for the year is usually booked in a matter of hours, the entire 18 month production run was ordered and locked (2012 was an intentionally long MY). They had some pigment in country; but, not enough to complete the order book. So, all the Kona Blue GT500's were put on hold while they determined whether they could be put off to the end of the MY, or not. In the end they decided to paint as many Kona Blue's as they could in the order that the orders were received in February...minutes counted. My car made the cut and was painted Kona Blue in July, 2011. They only built 20% of the Kona Blue GT500's that were originally ordered that year, the rest had to choose a different color.

To your point. I was part of running automotive factories for 23 years. I can't imagine turning the plants and the supply base off and on during COVID. At a company like Ford, managing the actual and potential bankruptcies of suppliers alone due to the interruptions could occupy hundreds of people. Let alone, the shipping, war and other issues that are wreaking havoc on the system. I spent a career doing everything possible to prevent those types of events from happening; because, we could imagine the nightmare they're living now.

Relax. Things happen. It has happened to like less than 15 vehicles. The odds are in your favor. I received the notice too. Am I worried about it bursting into flames….nope. That new Chevy and GMC have recalls too. Lifters especially, you are not going to get away from it because all manufacturers have recalls.

I understand they all have recalls. But the others don't involve having your vehicle catch fire. What ****** me off the most is Ford's lack of understanding how the fires started and no fix. Does the recall just stay open indefinitely if they never figure it out? And what does that mean for the value of the vehicles that fall into the build date range. I sure as heck would not but a used one that has this recall open.

With an open recall, doesn't that cause problems trying to trade in the vehicle or sell it if the recall fix hasn't been applied to the vehicle? Somewhere in the back of my mind I'm thinking people had difficulties trading in or selling their vehicles with the airbag recall if they didn't get the recall work done prior to the trade-in/sale. My memory isn't what it used to be so I could be mistaken.

Federal law prohibits new and used motor vehicle dealers, and some car rental agencies, from selling or leasing a new or used vehicle with an open safety recall. There is a civil penalty of $21,000 per vehicle sold or leased with an open safety recall.

There is no law (that I’m aware of) that prohibits an individual from selling a vehicle with an open safety recall.

I’d suspect that car dealers would not want to buy or take as a trade-in any vehicle that has an open safety recall, but cannot be fixed due to lack of parts and/or a remedy for the recall (such as the Expedition potential-fire safety recall).

I smell a class action law suit if Ford doesn't come up with a fix soon. Buy them back if you can't fix them.

I had my windshield wiper recall addressed two weeks ago. Parts of course may not be readily available. Still waiting on a fix for the fire recall.

They have a good idea of the cause. How else would it be possible to narrow down the dates of manufacture of the affected vehicles? Further, why would they mention disconnecting the battery cable.

The date range could just be the earliest and latest vehicle build dates that actually caught fire. And regarding disconnecting the battery. That's for people who cannot park outside or away from a building. Disconnect the battery and get the customer a rental. Still nothing regarding root cause or fix for the fire.

I too am fed up with Ford having a 2018 and 2019 with cam phaser, struts, shocks and transmission issues. I have a 2022 Yukon Denali that was shipped from the Arlington plant on April 1st and as of May 30th it is sitting in an open field in Midlothean, Texas awaiting some undisclosed "something". Hail, mice, squirrels, bird poop and who knows what are probably having a great time with my new SUV. I'm getting as fed up with GMC as I am with Ford.

That is not how either of those to items above work, or would work, no matter how much you wish they did.

Ford cannot control their supply chain, unless they are the manufacturer of the faulty parts, and own the supply chain back to the raw goods for the replacement parts.
You sue Ford
Ford sues their supplier
Their supplier sues their suppliers, who then sue their suppliers.

10 years later the suit(s) are settled, or the companies in question have gone out of business.

Case closed

Only winners, the lawyers, yes, really.

Yes, sure. But what is the cause of the fire? If they know it they should release the information.
