Ya for what the Expedition is usually used for the V6 Ecoboost would be perfect for it, you need the room but can't own a minivan then the suburban and expedition is what most will buy and if Ford puts the Eco boost in thr Expedition then hey will out sell the Chevy Suburban & GMC Youkon XL by far.

An updated Expedition is around the corner. U324 has been moved down on the priority list, but it’s not forgotten. Some cosmetic enhancements are due, along with some powertrain changes. Is a "boosted" Expedition coming? One cannot say for certain reasons. But don’t be surprised.

The U324’s automatic ControlTrac four-wheel drive system will remain with a two-speed dual range BorgWarner transfer box and torque-biasing locking center differential.

The lethargic obese American machine that composes mainstream, cares not about 4x4 low range, or shifting their own gears. So the mfr's cater to that.

Secondly, how many housewives/soccermom's can you picture letting Joe Six Pack go weekend wheeling in their 45-60k people mover?

I was listening to a radio show hosted by Jerry Reynolds a well connected and prominent promoter of Fords and he is under the impression that Ford is not going to put any real money into developing the Expy any further. He says that it may even go away as a discontinued model soon.
If you review the sales figures for the Expy they are shrinking to the point where they may no longer be a profitable vehicle for Ford to produce.
Their US sales figures are:
2002: 163,454
2003: 181,547
2004: 159,846
2005: 114,137
2006: 87,203
2007: 90,287
2008: 55,123
2009: 31,655
2010: 37,336
2011: 36,287
Canadian sales don't add much to these numbers with around 1500 for each of the last 4 years.

That's not quite fair to say because ALL vehicle sales are down. When the economy comes back, so will sales. People will always need big suv's to haul people and stuff. High gas prices alone can't kill'em and if you look at the #'s they are slowly coming back. Probably not as much as before but back.

I agree that the gas crunch and economy has hurt SUV sales as a whole but the Expy has been losing ground faster than any of them. It's a shame to see as we all like them but the facts are GM (Tahoe/Yukon and Suburban) holds about 70% of the large SUV market and Ford Expy has about 16%.
Here's a breakdown, it's only a single month but the numbers track pretty consistently.

i think if they update the damn drivetrain and some all around to compete with the newer GM's(which are now growing alittle long in the tooth but chevy also likes to leave things alone for along ass time before updates) it would help the regular buyer take a closer look before buying.

i wonder if fleet sales are factored into those numbers? ford sells ALOT of fleet trucks.

Freshen it up a bit and throw the EcoBoost under the hood, that'll make people look!

An Ecoboost would help with sales (assuming MPG's are improved over GM). For those of us with families that tow trailers, the Expy and the GMs are our only option. And Ford needs to consider that when re-designing the Expy. Give it some oomph and rear suspension options to accommodate a 10,000 lb trailer with 1,000 lbs of tongue weight. And for the love of God, give us decent tow mirrors.

The Expedition’s days are numbered, but it will not completely die off, at the very least, it may get a replacement. The "Expedition" nameplate may end, with the vehicle getting a new name. Happens all the time in the automotive world.

Until then (if that happens), the P552 is currently under development, and while I can’t say for sure if Ford plans to do so, the Expedition may start sharing sheet-metal and major interior components with it again, to cut costs. They have always shared chassis designs, certain suspension components, engines, transmissions, and so on.

The U222 back when it was released in late 2002 was the first Expedition to show differently styled sheet-metal and interiors.

It is confirmed that GM is readying its all-new generation Silverado/Sierra pickups, and the SUVs to be based off of it (Suburban, Yukon, Escalade, etc.) So a competitor is needed.

I don't think major redesign will be out till 2015 they are going to bleed dry the current design. 4 digit monthly sales are not going to be worth a big investment on these big boys. It would be wise to wait for the next body change on the f150 and introduce an expedition based in that design to share parts and keep cost low to be able to sell these big boys. So I'm thinking 2014 with a 2015 year on it. February sales did go up by 7%

I don't maintain any brand loyalty, having owned both Fords and Chevies. No one's mentioned diesels yet. Fossil fuels aren't going away anytime soon. I looked at everything, Tahoes, hemi Chrysler Aspens and smaller Grand Cherokees with the rare Diamler Benz diesel. For my money, the Expy came out #1 as the all round best SUV, so I got my second one. Now, if only the 2013's would come out with the rumored light weight, 4.7 V8 Powerstroke turbodiesel. Even at a premium price, I'll take the fuel economy and low end torque over Escalade status anyday. Just look to Europe, where fuel prices are at a premium. There's a reason for the greater number of operating diesels there, and this country still doesn't get it.
