50% better mileage running 93 other than the 87 recommended by the factory specs just don't seem right to me????????????:buttkick::buttkick::buttkick:

if your talking about baker...the truck is not factory anymore. plus now its tuned for 93 and if he put 87 in it would knock. my corolla got 40mpg stock i made a ram air and got it to 45 ran pure gas and was touching 50...

still mostly driving corolla... front end smashed no more ram air and doing 50% highway and 50% city with alot of WOT almost every light unless i see a cop and i got 32mpg today

i ran 100 octane on my truck yesterday, man my 5.4 loves that gas its running so smooth and the acceleration is alot quicker
Where the hell did you find 100 octane...you find a moonshine still somewhere??? or did you go to the airport? LMAO....Share man share...

well baker i live in chicago, if i drive 10 miles out of my way to bensinville there is a citgo minute man gas station that has one special pump with only 89 octane 93 octane and then 100 octane racing fuel. i paid 4.99 a gallon for it but it was worth it. this is the only gas station I know of with 100 octane around here.

that high octane is some wicked stuff....I would be curious to see how a tank would do and what the mpg's would be

i dont know how a full tank of 100 octane would act on the o rings and piston rings, i use like 2 gallons at a time it seems to like it lol

Be careful with the racing fuel, its leaded (generally) we have 110 here. I run it in the harley all the time, what a difference. Even over pump gas 93. Along time ago when sportin the '67 F-100 with a built 352, I ran out of fuel once. A guy had some aviation fuel. Put about 2 gallon in it, WOW! did it liven up that motor.

The 110 here is about 6.69 or so a gal. Id like to run 5 gal thru and see how it does someday. :gr_grin:

just wondering, what would it do to the engine if its leaded?
Leaded gas will kill your cats and O2 sensors over time. Leaded gas went away due to environmental reasons. If you look at the label of some of those octane boosters, which have lead in them, they will tell you extensive use of the product will lead to O2 sensor and cat failure.

Personally, I think running any more octane than what the engine is tuned for is a waste. All engines in modern cars, whether it is a high end sports car, or an economical car are built and tuned to very tight tolerances for a specific type of gas. This is because manufacturers want to get every ounce of efficiency out of the engine when it comes to gas mileage. This is also why tunes for pretty much any modern car, even high performance sports cars, will sacrifice a bit of performance for better gas mileage.

So will an engine technically perform better with higher octane fuel than what it was originally tuned for? Sure it will. But will the engine perform at max efficiency with higher octane fuel without a tune for it? No.

It all depends if you want that tid bit of extra power...then go 91 or higher.
One thing I learned about premium is to use it for a smog test, it burns cleaner

well heres what i learned, dont listen to the owners manual or anyone else. i was using premium and pushing like 10.5 miles per gallon (before tune up). tried 89 seeing as everyone keeps saying these trucks are not tuned to burn 93. well my mileage dropped to like 9.5 miles per gallon since filling with mid grade gas. screw regular and mid grade gas I'm sticking with 93. and I know that its the gas because I just had a tune up and have all new motor-craft plugs and a new coil, when i got the truck back i was pushing around 11.5 but then put in the mid grade and watched my mileage meter plummet

What brand of gas were you using for the low, mid and premium during your testing? Were they all the same brand? Also, how consistent was your driving during your testing and how long did your testing last? There is a noticeable difference in engine performance over time when using branded gas which is better (i.e. Shell, Texaco, BP, etc) vs "no-name" gas (i.e. everything else).

In my daily commute, I can vary my driving style very little but can range from 12 MPG average for a tank of gas all the way up to 14.5 MPG for a full tank of gas. Also, keep in mind that it takes the ECU in the truck time to adapt to the new grade of gas, at least one tank full if not more. The changes you saw in performance, both the improved and decrease, can be attributed to the ECU not having enough time to fully adapt to the different grade of gas.

Again, I am not saying that higher octane gas does not help. But if you give your truck the proper amount of time to adapt to the new fuel (while keeping your driving style as consistent as possible) you will find that the actual improvement of the new gas is not as much as you would think, and therefor potentially not worth the extra cost unless you get a tune that is specifically designed for the higher octane.

i used the same brand gas, citgo gas from my station. I drove the truck the same way i always drive it but i noticed it was taking more throttle to get it moving up to speed and i normally drive at 40 mph. with 93 at 40 mph i was averaging 10.5, at 40 mph with 89 im averaging 9.5, that to me is a loss worth spending the extra 10 cents on premium. also ive noticed i smell gas more with the 89 then with the 93. with the 93 you can stick your nose up the exhaust pipe and there would be no smell. soon though i am going to be running a tune that calls for 93 octane so Im probably better off just sticking with what i know works.

I do but it is like $.40 more a gallon. It did seem to run a litter better, but not for an extra $10 per fill up.

A stock expy should just run on normal gas. More octane doesnt always mean more power. Put the gas in the tank that the vehicle is engineered for if you run stuck or minimal mods. Superchargers and turbos and chips are prob a different story. The engines in expys really arent designed to need the extra octane so why buy it. Generally high performance cars cant handle the normal grade of gas due to higher precision parts. Besides, expys are suv's and dont need to be babied by high grade gas. Let that 5.4 rumble

We run lowest grade at work (since that's all they want to pay for). Im my personal Exped I normally run the low grade but after reading this thread I might try running a few tanks of premium just for kicks

just me...but i dont think the brand of gas makes a difference...there are only 3 companies...if i remember right...that actually provide the gas...so those kangaroo and circle k gas stations buy from the same company...same way i found out that my rims are made in china...china...just knew they were built in country but everyone is outsourcing their products...if i had a shop...i would buy from china on the low...and make $$$$

The gas itself is pretty much the same across board. Where the difference comes in is the name brands have more and better detergents in them. The other thing about no name stations(the ones that don't get alot of customers) is the gas can get water in it from sitting.
