The ride in my '97 Expy is starting to get a little rough..Seems like it's came on in the last few months..Just kind of snuck up on me..I did raise my tire pressure to max for mpg but I didn't notice an immediate difference..How long should the factory shocks last ? What affects a smooth ride the most, shocks or springs..I've always wondered..It doesn't have air shocks...Thanks

Your rough ride is most likely from the increased air pressure.

A shocks lifetime is dependant on the environment, job it is asked to perform and quality of construction. When a leak is noticed or it starts to float are signs they are in need of replacement.

The tire pressure isn't going to make much difference and even if it does it will be offset by the uneven wear caused from overpressure. Overpressure tends to wear the center of the tire more than the outsides..i would put the tires at the pressure listed on the door sticker then see how that affects the ride..

First, you need to tell us what 'to the max' is in PSI.
Next... it's doubtful that the stock shocks in your truck are in tip top shape. That being said, bad shocks will make the truck feel wallow-y, and big hits like potholes will often bottom out the suspension (making it feel harder).

Also, the knocking noise from worn suspension parts can make it seem like the ride is rougher than it truly is.

Sorry for the time lag... My maximum tire pressure is what is suggested on the Michelin tires at 35 psi.. my shocks don't show any leakage.. my miles per gallon seems to be stuck at about 14 mph no matter what I do.. so I'm going to put my pressure back to 30 psi.. seems to make a little difference in the ride... but I'm still curious what I can do to put the ride back when it was newer without spending an arm and a leg... it has about 180,000 miles and I've owned it since new with regular highway driving in the CA High Desert... what would you suggest?
The ride is quiet with no squeaks or noises...

I would replace the shocks. They are 15+ years old and have a lot of miles on them. Also, when they do go bad, it isn't a gradual process, which matches your description.
