Just when cruising, or decellerating? A bit more info., is the shudder in the rear, the middle of the truck?, could be that you lost a wheel weight, does it get worse if you go faster than 45-55?

Shudder

I have had that since I have owned the Expy which has been since Sept 2000. I have had it checked and no one can tell me what it is but it is very consistent, just does not make any sense. The timing is inconsistant with wheels, drive shaft, or any other rotating piece. I would definately love to know why.

It could be your drive shaft. Check it for dents or chunks of mud. Then try removing the drive shaft and checking the tail shaft of your transmission for play, same thing for the pinion on your diff.
You can also try checking your hub bearings. Jack up one side of the front of the vehicle, grab the top and bottom of the wheel, not the tire, and try to move the wheel back and forth in opposite directions (push the top away from you while pulling the bottom towards you, etc). If it gives at all, your hub bearings could be bad. The wheel should not move. If the bearings are worn it can cause vibration, excessive tire wear, etc.
Good luck!

Sounds like it's common...

@ tmajikman ... it shudders more whenever it's colder outside or on an incline (especially accelerating up the incline) ... but it's been happening at higher speeds as well now.

@ everyone else ... glad to know it's not just me having this issue ... have y'all had any issues with the fuel system in conjunction with this? I recently took her in for the 100k mile service and they said everything looked alright and that I've been taking good care of it but that it could use a fuel system cleaning (something I have yet to take care of).

Thanks all!

Ok. When it shutters. Does it do it before it downshifts. Lets say ur driving down the freeway. U want to pass a car. U step on the gas enough to downshift out of overdrive. The engine shutters for a bit. Then it down shifts..

I think this is from a boot on the one of the coils gone bad or a coil going bad. The boots get holes from the vibs of the engine. it would cause the spark to go threw the rubber boot and spark against the engine. It would not be found on a computer unless it happens while on the computer. At this. I would pull one at a time. look at the boot for cracks rips holes.

I would also look at getting a can of injector cleaner. Hear in Utah we have a can called 44k. it is on the pricey side, but does a wonderful job. I would try this as well.
I dont think it would be a torque converter. the converter is full of trany fluid. Find a company that will pull the tranny pan and flush the system and install a new tranny filter. This could be a good option.

A u joint could be to blame. Put the truck in nutreul and lock the ebrake. then climb under the car and shack the drive shaft at the joints in all directions. if it moves. then its back. Their are weights on the drive shafts, that fall off or become loose.

It could be a tire going bad. may have a buldge in it. Or a seporation...

How many miles are on the truck? One more thing people have spoke about quite often is the rear end gear oil, I hear quite often that folks have a shuddering affect and when they changed over to Royal Purples recommend weight gear oil, the shudder goes away. I think the cost is around $20 a quart, and the 9.75 rear takes almost 3 quarts. Use RTV only, no gasket when you change the fluid if you don't want the cover to leak after the reinstall, btw.

Having a similar problem with my 2005 expedition xlt 5.4ltr. I have 114 k and recently on the freeway i would let off the gas and when i would accelerate I would get some hesitation. I thought it might be the overdrive so i tried turning it off and repeated the slight deceleration and reapplication of the gas. It would hesitate also. Thought it might be the fuel pump going out on me. I dont seem to have any kind of hesitation starting or acceleration on surface streets just on the freeway. It is definitely hesitation not a drive line or hub. Very confusing and appreciate the suggestions.

Did you swap all of your spark plugs yet?

This weekend I am replacing the plugs and coil packs to see if this was the problem. Interesting side note is that when it raining and very wet the shutter is the worst. This morning going into work the weather is very dry and I had no shutter whats so ever....I assume moisture must be getting into the coil packs or pack. I went to get a code reading but was unable due to not having a cel light showing.

I will keep you posted on the level of difficulty and how long it takes. My local discount auto parts store wants $50 bucks each for the coils so I am going to go the Ebay route. My biggest fear is not getting the correct part for the job. Has anyone had any trouble with the ordering of these and any recommendations around who they have ordered from in the past would be great.

I bought the COP's from UNEEK on Ebay...no issues. I didn't think swapping them out was too difficult.

I bought the coils on ebay----8 for $90. Just replaced them all including the plugs 2 weeks ago in my driveway. I am handy, but no master mechanic, and it took me about 3 hrs to do the job. That includes smoke breaks, and the kids bugging me, so it wasn't too bad. Cylinders 3, 4 and 8 are not fun. Good luck. Make sure you get some dielectric grease for the coil conectors and some anti-seize for the spark plugs.

Has anyone checked to see if any the engine mounts are cracked/shot? A cracked/shot one would probably cause engine vibration at a particular frequency range (speed range)

I know this because I had the exact same problem in my Cadillac. Between 68 and 72 it'd shudder like an s.o.b. Pissed me off at first. I checked EVERYTHING!! suspension, wires, spark plugs, alignment, tire balancing/toe/camber...blah, blah, blah.
Finally, I took it for the regular state inspection and the guy says "hey, you've got a cracked engine mount. I'll change it for $100 and you'll pass"
he did it, and voila!! Drove like a charm!! No more shudder.

I'm not saying it might be the answer but it's sure as heck worth the time to check, no? Goodluck either way

My 2000 would do that going into overdrive. Changed the tranny fluid/filter and that fixed it. When the fluid starts to break down this can happen. Sometimes with higher miles you need to change to another fluid altogether (can't remember which one I was told) that has more friction I think.

Well, i just spent about $1000 to fix a problem like you are describing. Turns out it was my drive shaft that was binding in the double U joint at the transfer case (4x4). Unfortunately, it was vibrating enough that over the course of about 6000 miles it wore the back end of the transfer case out.

It took a "new" used drive shaft, and a rebuild kit for the transfer case to fix. Prior to that, i had gone through everything - U joints, CV joints, bearings, you name it.

Pull the shaft and check for binding.

I have a shudder problem and may be similar to yours. Mine is the torque converter clutch engaging and disengaging. When it locks or unlocks (engages) the for a split second it shudders. The shudder feels like your running off the highway and driving on those rub strips that shake the vehicle and wake the driver.

I've proved it to myself by driving 50 mph and while holding the gas pedal I lightly touch the brake pedal. This causes the computer to unlock the converter. (If your stepping on the brake then the converter has to be unlocked or else the engine could stall when coming to a stop)

I haven't had time or money to change the fluid. I heard about people using a "Shudder stop" type fluid additive so I bought some made by Lucas. It helps but not enough to fix the problem. Ultimately the fluid is sheared and worn out. I bought this truck used with 138K miles on it so who knows if it's been maintained.....

So far each person I've heard about with this problem has fixed it by changing the tranny fluid and filter.
