On Expeditions, Sync3 was rolled out in the middle of the 2016 model year. During my recent shopping for a 2015-2017 Expedition, I noted that 2017s had Sync3, 2015s had the older Sync system, and 2016s were a split between Sync w/FordTouch and Sync3. Another mid-year change in 2016 was the version of the USB hub.

My recently purchased 2016 Platinum has Sync3, though it was only version 1 (current is version 3). I had to download and install an update to get to the current Sync3 version. I also paid for, downloaded, and installed a maps update. Finally, I had to install a newer version of the USB hub in the center console to make Apple CarPlay work.

None of this was difficult and the total cost was less than $140.

To identify your version of Sync, take a look at the following: https://owner.ford.com/support/how-tos/sync/what-sync-version-do-I-have.html

If you want Sync 3, you can purchase a Sync 3 display and APIM and it'll work (plug and play). They aren't cheap, though.
