To aide in defogging and demisting (removing condensation on the inside
of the windshield) in cool weather:
1. Select PANEL & FLOOR
2. Set the temperature control to full heat
3. Select A/C
4. Set the fan speed to HI
5. Direct the outer panel vents towards to side windows
To increase airflow to the outer panel vents, close the central panel
vents.

how would the result be different if you deleted step 1? or if you go buck wild and stared on just FLOOR for step 1?

If I am understanding you correctly by adding "panel" you can direct the vents towards the side windows

So you heat the vehicle and defog the windows. The panel defogs the windows. The floor does the rest of the vehicle

these instructions are in the section of the manual describing how to operate my type of HVAC system which is the 3 knob system.
knob 1) fan speed
knob 2) temperature
knob 3) ac, max ac, panel, floor, off, panel&floor, def&floor, def

so let me copy the instructions and add something in brackets as it relates to my car:

1. Select PANEL & FLOOR [TURN KNOB 3 TO PANEL & FLOOR]
2. Set the temperature control to full heat
3. Select A/C [TURN KNOB 3 TO A/C]
4. Set the fan speed to HI
5. Direct the outer panel vents towards to side windows

that does not making f'ing sense. so like i asked, what if i'm feeling crazy and decide to select something besides panel&floor for step 1?

the result is still the same.

If you select something other than panel/floor, the only difference is where the air comes out. That's it.
