My daughters 2009 Expidition has a THUMP when she shifts into reverse. No other time, so I believe that rules out u-joints. Anyone have this or heard of it? Thanks

I'd still slide under it and take a look at the u joints.

While you're there you could put it in neutral and see if there is any play in the rear end when you try to spin the driveshaft by hand.

Then if you still don't find any problem (and you trust her) you can get under it and have her re-create the problem and see if you find any thing that moves that would cause the noise. If it's nothing external that makes the noise, then it's time to start thinking transmission or transfer case.

I'm new here and I don't know if it's "mess with the new guy " day or what, but if you think I am going to climb under the vehicle while my daughter puts it in gear you surely don't know my daughter. I will barely ride with her when she drives. I will enlist a friend to help me and see what I find. Sounds like a good start (except for the daughter part) Thanks I'll give it a try.

Think of it as a scaled up version of the old "falling backward" trust excercise.
Just to be safe though, before you do it, tell her that you changed your will.

I recommend beer after the project not before or during and stay off the road when my daughter drives.
