Morning,

We recently replaced out 2013 Max with a 2015 Expedition Max. We are getting a 'thunk' out of the tranny/axle/yoke when in reverse at slow speed, most noticeable when you tap the brakes to slow you down a little while reversing. It makes you think you have bumped something behind you, which causes some panic as you might imagine. Occasionally, we get the same thunk after being in reverse and shifting into drive as you start to move forward. These are the only times it does this.

We have been back to the dealer twice and they seem unable to resolve.

The Raptor Forum seems to suggest it could be 'rear axle slap' (the suspension adjusting and the yoke sliding back and hitting the backing plate) but I have been unable to find any comments on our forum.

Anyone else come across this on their Expy?

Thanks!

I know this won't help - but I bought a new 2015 Expedition 4x4 Limited (not the EL). There is NO noise in the drivetrain when shifting into drive or reverse.

I bought a new 2003 Dodge Durango SLT 4x4 years ago and it made the clunk noise at times when shifting into drive and reverse. At times, it would make the noise when accelerating normally, then lifting your foot from the gas pedal (such as approaching a red light). The dealer worked on the the rear differential several times, telling me it was "rear axle slap". The dealer worked on the rear differential twice but never eliminated the noise completely. I was never happy with the vehicle and regretted not pushing the dealer to replace the rear differential under warranty.

With my prior experience, I would not accept this type of serious defect in a new vehicle. Good luck.

Yeah, our 2013 was great, no issues at all which is why its disappointing to have this on our 2015.

A Dad of a kid that I coach at hockey is a service advisor at Ford and he as never heard of it. But he says they sell so few Expy's in Canada its not surprising to have an issue they have not heard of.

If you have this issue you know it as you regularly feel like you just ran over someone walking behind you. Its great to keep the blood flowing ;)

Does Canada (or your province) have any type of new vehicle "lemon law" that you could research to see if your vehicle qualifies?
