Are you sure the new gem you got is good. What have you tested so far?

Let's see: windows don't work, side mirrors don't work, rear wiper doesn't work, heat doesn't work. Ac doesn't work. Using the control panel for the windows makes the dorman change positions. The dome light and running lights don't work. 4X4 only works in AWD mode. Hitting the lock unlock button changes the fan speed for the heat/Ac.

So, any thoughts?

The gem was new and sealed when I bought a it as was the MFS.

Did you have all of these problems before you changed the GEM and MFS.

When you replaced the GEM did you remove the fuse block?

You might have bent the pins on either the gem or fuseblock installing it. If you did you'd have wires crossing each other. You might want to pull them out and make sure their straight and not. Touching each other. It's easy to bend the pins when installing. Let us know what you find.

Yes I had all of these issues prior to replacing the GEM and MFS. I will look to see if I have any bent pins hopefully tomorrow. And yes, I did pull the fuse block when I did the swap.

On my current expy I had a problem with the rear window defrost in that it would blow a 40 amp fuse every time I would press the switch. The GEM and fuse block had been previously changed and when I finally found the cause of the problem it was due to a bent pin at the back of the fuse block when the large connectors are connected.

I would suggest that you use a meter and check all of the fuses to make sure they are good.

Some of the issues that you are having are not related to the gem and some are not
The heat and A/C issues for instance.

When my gem got wet last year before I sealed winshield, the blower motor for the heater and air would come on and off by itself. When it dried of course it stopped. Could water or something under the hood getting into that fuse box cause any of his problems?

Yes water can be the cause of many problems

This is just my opinion but I think the gem gets blamed for many problems that are caused by water getting into the fuse block.

I remember how tight it was working in there. Something getting bent or broken was real easy to do if not careful.

In looking over the wiring diagrams for you 97 expy there is a common connection point for some of your problems That is the ground connection.

Look at your ground connections behind the front kick panels and make sure they are clean and tight.

The common ground for some of your problems is G200 which is behind the passenger
kick panel.

If you have had problems with a leaky windshield it is possible that you may have lost those grounds due to rust or corrosion. But again check all of the grounds behind the kick panels

Yes I can read and follow wiring diagrams. I forgot to mention that I have already replaced the ground on both sides.

I would suggest that you get a copy of the Ford Service manual on DVD These are specific to your year and model and have complete wiring diagrams showing connectors, and locations and pin layouts plus much more. The can be found on e-bay

Don't waste your money on Clymer or Haynes manuals. They may have good information in them but they are not year and model specific.

Or send me a PM and I will give you some other information about the manuals

Have attached print for your power mirrors. And also the connector pin layout for the mirror switch. As you can see the GEM is not involved in this circuit. And you should be able to check for voltage and grounds. Start by checking for power at fuse #4 and then at the switch. Post your results

not to seem impatient or anything but, honestly my biggest concern is the heat. its middle of december in wisconsin. its cold and i have a 2 yr old that i need to be able to take places. if i could solve the heat issue asap and the worry about the rest that would be the best. i have already rigged my windows to work from the driver side panel. thanks

Check the coolant for rust contamination - you shouldn't see any red/brownish coloring to the coolant.
With the engine at operating temperature, check the two heater hoses temperature - both should be hot to the touch. The temp gauge should also be in the normal position which is usually the middle of the sweep.

i know off the bat the temp gauge sits at 1/4 instead of half. also, during the hot months i seemed to go through coolant quickly.
