I just got around to checking my transmission fluid (had the truck since August) and the fluid level is higher than the top of the "do not fill" section. The dealer I bought it from (Kia) must have overfilled it because they said they flushed the transmission and changed the plugs as part of their used car prep. Anyway, what kind of problem might this cause me and what should I do? Have it flushed again and checked out?

I believe fluid may leak from seals that are above normal level. You could blow seals. It could also become aerated which could cause problems. Someone I knew a few years ago used a hand crank pump. Just need a hose that is small enough.

most have a drain plug in the trans pan...drain some out and then top it off accordingly, or take it back to the dealer and tell them to deal with it...I know the quick oil change places also can suck some of it out....but you need to get the extra out..

Thanks everyone.... I went to a parts store and bought a suction thingy with a long tube attached and tried it, but unfortunately it went down about 2 feet before hitting something solid. It lacked about a foot from reaching the fluid. I guess I'll have to find another use for the suction thingy and go for some professional help.

Yes I did. Actually, I did it exactly as the manual said just to make sure I was right... Drive it enough to get it hot, put on the parking brake, shifted through all the gears, put it back in park, check the fluid while engine is running. A local garage up the street from me told me to bring it back tomorrow morning and they'll drain some of the fluid. Hopefully that'll be the last thing the dealer "fixed" that I will have to fix.

Just thought of this - While I have transmission fluid on my mind and the truck is having fluid drained, is there any reason why I shouldn't just let them drain the whole thing and put in synthetic fluid? Is that a good or bad idea, or would it even make any difference?

Using synthetic can provide smoother shifting and the transmission will run cooler. I don't think there is a downside to it but I have never used it.

Going to the Ford dealer Saturday morning for a tranny flush and fill with full synthetic. I don't want to have to mess around with this transmission again for a long time.

Wow what an immediately noticeable difference! It was about a 20 minute interstate trip back from the Ford dealer. What I noticed on that trip is it really does seem to drive "more alive" and shift easier. The very slight shudder it had when going into OD at times seems to be completely gone. Maybe it's my imagination, but I think the Expy is happier.

What they did was flush the tranny and fill with all synthetic fluid, and that also included the transfer case. After the dust settled, I ended up paying them $229.00.
