Hello

My 5.4 has a small rip in the vacuum hose and I've been putting it off because if it's a simple cut out and replace job then I'm hoping to do it myself. My question is if there is a metal pipe within the rubber hose or if it's a simple matter of cutting out the piece, replacing it with clamps. Or do you recommend replacing the whole line. I just don't want to tow a 2002 to the dealership and have them hose me (pun intended) for hundreds of dollars.

From your previous post, that's a nice looking Expedition. Can you post a pic of the hose and where you think it's leaking? The tranny doesn't have a vacuum hose, so your question is a bit confusing. There are two hoses on the tranny and transfer case that are vent hoses. They just run up the top of the transmission and should be open at the ends. There are two oil pipes that connect to the passenger side of the tranny, metal for the most part, that go forward to the radiator and oil cooler if it has one. Both pipes have rubber segments up under the radiator support. Is it leaking transmission fluid from there? If so, you can repair it with a 3/8" hose barb coupler and a couple hose clamps, provided there's enough rubber fore and aft of the leak to insert the coupler.

As for vacuum hoses, there are a bunch and they're all easy to replace. At the age of your vehicle it probably wouldn't hurt to start replacing them all. It's easy to do yourself. There are a couple preformed hoses with special plastic endings you can buy online.
