Hi I have an 01 Expy 5.4. I changed trans fluid last week using Mercon5 fluid, everything was fine, shifted great. Yesterday when I was out I had to give it extra pedal to get it to move. Getting in it today I put it in gear and nothings there, it like it's in park. The dipstick is way over the full mark would that have anything to do with the problem I'm having?

Truck has 112,000 miles on it. I just got it in June so don't know how often it was changed but the fluid was bright red when I drained it.

Did the old fluid look / smell dirty burnt and black?

What can happen is the old fluid can coat the internals of the trans and not let the new fluid do its job. When I owned my shop, we wouldn't do a trans fluid change if the fluid looked too far gone.

Is there any chance that the new filter wasn't seated in very well?

No it wasn't black, had no burnt smell. Like I said it was red when I drained it, looked real good actually. Everything was fine for a week then yesterday I'd be at a red light and upon hitting gas there was nothing there then it would catch and go. It shifts fine just that there's nothing there when putting it in gear now. There were no bangs, clunks, noises or anything.

I drained a quart of fluid and everything is fine. When I originally changed the fluid 7qts came out so I replaced 7. It must have over filled it and the vent tubes were blocked then when the fluid heated up there was nowhere for the air to escape. Thank you everyone for your replies and help.

glad your drain plug didn't spin freely like mine --- tranny fluid baths aren't fun.

Well that didn't last long, started bucking like a mechanical bull then barely moving on way home. Planetary gears were destroyed, I baby that truck all the time too. 1,600 later and she's back home. Had to be rebuilt. Ughm
