So do think Ford has fixed the clunking and hard downshift issues? I have a 2019 and won’t get another expedition if they haven’t figured this out. Thanks.

I went from a 18 to a 21 and the transmission is quieter in my opinion. It can also be a case by case thing as I made Ford rent me a Expedition whenever my 18 had to go to the dealer for warranty work and I had two different expys both 19s at different times and both transmissions were quieter then my 18.

don't think the OP is referring to quietness. It's the slamming into gear issue that all 10R80 transmissions have been experiencing at times. My Expedition has been in for the same issue at least half a dozen times and is going back again today. I have a '22 on order but I'm in the same boat as the OP. I'll be damned if i'm going to pay to move to a new one just to have the exact same issues.

My car would undoubtedly be a lemon if i hadn't exceeded the mileage limit (i'm hitting 61K miles after 28 months of ownership).

God I hope the transmission is better. That’s the main reason we need to get rid of our ‘18 is because of the transmission issues we’ve had. I just hope it holds up until we can get our new one built and delivered.

YES! That’s the issues I’m speaking of. Congratulations on the new one coming to you. I hope someone can let us know if the problem remains.

I have a 21 in the shop right now with the transmission slam from park to drive only. It only has 1,600 miles on it. I wll post what they say once I get it back.

I guess I have gotten lucky with not experiencing it with the 21 I have. Just rolled over 6k miles and still no slam or any other transmission issues. They don’t start…..

I don't think this issue is super common. My 2019 doesn't do anything weird with the transmission. In fact I absolutely love the transmission.

It is very common. Ford just won't admit it due to warranty exposure. Google 10R80 transmission issues and you will see all sorts of problems across several Ford vehicle platforms.

my 2018 has 48k miles on it. transmission failed last month, still in dealer's place. Luck bought the extended warranty. But if this issue always sticks around, definitely move on to other brands. Ford really did not handled my case very decently.

Fortunately my 2018 transmission seems fine. After cam phasers replacement, transmission had to re-learn, presumably from having battery disconnected for extended period of time.
I will make one comment, I think it is important to bring truck to a complete stop before shifting from reverse to drive.
With the dial it is easy to start shifting to drive while still moving backwards. I have a theory that habitually with sudden shift causes the transmission to learn some “bad habits”. Stating that, I doubt this is the root cause of serious hard shift issues. However it is something easy to experiment with.

We have an 18 that has had all the cam phasers done (4xs, right/lt side twice) doors that would not close, hard down shift in the 15-25 mph range. The down shift they seem to have addressed by a computer relearn. Been maybe 10 months and it has not returned. Bought used and made the dealer give us a warranty after they failed to disclose the engine work before we bought it. Can’t wait for the 22.

Hey everyone, was just looking up any other questions / comments on the hard downshift. i got my 2022 expy Max in August. only 3000 miles so far but noticed the hard downshift at times coming to a stop. After driving a GM 10 speed, this tranny seems wonderful but wondered if others were experiencing the same thing. Doesn't sound like there is a fix out there yet. If they are like GM, there never will be. Will keep my eye on this forum. Thanks to all.

My 2022 is slightly better than my 2019, but I still experience some clunking downshifts. The other day it was a cold morning and the first stop sign I hit it made a horrible sound. I don't think much has changed with these you either have to accept it or find something else to drive.

Parents have a ‘20 and we have a ‘22. The transmission in ours is much smoother, quieter and seems calibrated much better. Smoothest transmission I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned quite a few Ford vehicles. We have around 8k miles atm.

GM and Ford Co-Developed the 10 speed transmission together. How did GM get it so right and Ford get it so wrong? Seems like Ford is getting their engineers off street corners these days.

Mechanically they are the same. The programming is different. GM favors longer RPM band utilization, ford tries to keep the truck out of boost when possible. It’s all for the EPA, if you tune it they can adjust the shift points, makes the transmission shift better.

If they are mechanically the same, why are the Ford units physically failing? Ford Crappy build or Q/A vs GM?

BTW, I'm not necessarily sticking up for GM, I have several GM vehicles and they have their issues as well, but not generally in core components (Engines and Transmissions) and when a severe widespread problem is uncovered, they fix it.
