I'm curious how they attach the cooler to the raptor. While changing the oil the other day I didn't see where you could add in a cooler but it may be possible.

My trip went well, on the slow up hill section I was able to go a touch faster 30-35 because of no traffic and that helped the temps, never went above 235. Once I hit the dirt road I put it in 4lo and temps dropped and never went above 215 or so. My brothers gmc canyon transmission was 245 by the time he hit the dirt road though, so they can't handle it either I guess. I also talked to a guy who was trailering out a nissan frontier that had a toasted transmission (I believe he was towing a sidexside of some flavor). Guess hot transmissions are pretty common out there even when towing below max tow rating.

If it is mounted to the radiator, depending on the plumbing, kicking the main fans on earlier or adding a pusher fan should help? I used to think fans were useless above a certain speed, but with all the crap stuffed in the noses of modern vehicles, this may offer some benefit.

There isn't a transmission cooler on these like on other vehicles, it is a water cooled heat exchanger. Coolant travels back to the heat exchanger on the transmission then back up to the radiator. The transmission fluid is not moving forward to an air cooled unit in the front. So, the transmission fluid will basically be the same temp as the coolant. I think this is adequate most of the time but it is very limited when air flow is low and the engine is working hard. Seems to me that something that would help keep the coolant temp down would also help keep the transmission temp down.

I have seen talk that a better intercooler seems to help keep the temps down, not sure if that would really help the lower speed working hard scenario but maybe?

For sure, I have had mine up to 240 Trans and engine temp. They seem to stay the same once heat soaked pulling the boat. According to the F-150 guys the water temp over temp is 250* then it goes into limp mode until it cools down. The Trans temp max temp is 255* before it reduces power. I am going to try and get ahold of them this week. Not sure where it actually goes.

Fozzy - Is this the factory cooler, or the additional cooler the Raptors have? I keep going back and forth between Gen 3 and Gen 4 so trying to keep my facts straight.

Gen 4 has a cooler integrated into the factory Rad? Or a stand alone water to oil (trans fluid) cooler?

My 2019 appears to have a water to oil cooler.

Anything with the 10 speed will have the oil to water cooling for the transmission. There is a portion of the radiator that is used. That’s why the HD Tow Package states it has a larger radiator instead of larger transmission cooler. The Raptor has an additional oil to air cooler located on the drivers side in front of the radiator. I need to find out how that works and if we can incorporate it on the Expy.

So what am I missing on the picture attached above? The diagram above is a different cooler than your referencing on the raptor? Is that not a small secondary cooler mounted basically at the front of the/bottom of the trans?

In the picture you are referencing the oil to water cooler often called a heat exchanger. It just doesn’t show the hoses that run to the radiator. That is the only cooler you have. The water from the radiator cools the transmission fluid As it passes through the heat exchanger. The Raptor has an additional oil to air cooler.

Everything makes a hell of a lot more sense now... Thanks Fozzy.
