Hello people. I’m Victor owner of 2014 expedition XLT 4x4 with 180k some towing usually light short runs. Going west to Tennessee plan on towing a travel trailer my max towing capacity weight. Opinions on should I replace original with a manufactured tranny before or after it craps out. Also input on rear suspension modifications to handle the work.

If there is nothing wrong with the tranny, doesn’t slip in any gear, change the transmission fluid and filter, watch the temperature and keep on going.

I concur. If there is nothing wrong with your current transmission, I would recommend a full fluid and filter replacement. It won't be cheap, but it will save you a lot of heartache later. Also, watch your transmission temp gauge. Slow down if necessary if it gets too hot when towing.

As a matter of practice, I change my tranny fluid for vehicles that tow every 100K miles. When I did my 2012, the fluid was still good, but showing color change (I believe indicative of heat from towing).

What do you mean? It won't be cheap as far as the fluid replacement goes? I'm just curious because I just dealt with a bad shady shop and a transmission cooler line that was busted when it hit a deer. I bought it from an insurance auction and it seems great, but I hate these sealed systems. I can't check anything myself. I didn't trust that they actually flushed transmission fluid so when I want to do it myself and I'm not paying anyone to do something I can do myself ever again it cost me $900 by the time I got my truck back there for a new battery and one little tube fixed that I provided them but they couldn't put it on because it was not an oem part. Did a charge back on it.
