I bought brand new Expedition Limitied EL in october and I almost have 40000 miles on it already. What should I do about transmission fluid? how often should I drain it or should I flushed it. Should I use Ford fluid?

I asked the dealer about transmission service in my 2007 with 53000 mile and they said the only reccomended service was a fluid flush and at 100,000 filter and fluid change.

Flush at 100K is a usually big no no even if dealer says so. I will do drain and fill every 30K miles due to flushing tranny has been proven to kill tranny too.

My post wasn't very clear. Sorry. The dealer said you don't change the filter till 100k and services up till then where just flushes not filter and fluid change. I don't totally agree with them but they are supposed to be the experts. One other thing why the %#*^ would you not put a dipstick in the engine compartment. That doesn't make any sense to me.

your trans is only due for a flush at 100,000 miles unless you are doing heavy towing. the new fluid is different and a flush at that mileage is fine with the new fluids. It takes a new type of fluid make sure if you get it flushed they use it because other fluids will ruin the trans.

So basically dont do nothing until 100K miles then just do full flush??? I always liked 30K miles drain and fill method and used it on my other cars and never had tranny problems. Oh well will listen to your expert opinion thanks

that is the factory recommendation and we have had little problem from it. the new fluids are full synthetic and last much longer without breaking down. ther is nothing wrong with doing it at 30k but I wouldn't do a filter , just take it somewhere where they have aflush machine make sure they use the correct fluid and dont go for any additives. The filter will be good to 100k. by the way some of the new fluids look dark when they are new so you can't go by the color as much.
