well the time has come i need to either rebuild my ford trac lok or replace it with a new something..

i am curious if anyone is running or has some good info on the true trac LSD

from reading about it, they don't use cluthes they use a worm gear so there is not clutch pack to where out and no need for the friction modifier additive

TIA

just go all out and get a detroit locker. im going to get one. you will have to learn that on turns not to give it gas. cause with out power it will not lock up. so if your on a turn and flooring it, itll lock up and your tires will chirp and bounce around. also some people worry about the clunking the detroit gives them. its normal. thats its acting like how it is. locking and unlocking under load. so gas it on the straights and its a locker. cruising straight open, turns with no gas, open. turns with gas locked. just got to drive funny. i mean a little gas sometimes wont be enough to engage the locker either. just need to learn how to drive it.

o and i was reading on f150online that this guy has a detroit rear, arb front, in his f150. and he was saying that people that think lockers in snow are bad, have never drivin in the snow with a locker. he said its the greatest thing ever. cause he never looses traction now. cause his came with a lsd and he always lost traction going up his drive way. now if he loses traction he just turns on his arb and away he goes. haha

The only problem with a locker is that for him hes in canada and lockers arent as good as a good limited slip in the snow, Kwt if you do hardcore offroading as in rocks and stuff more then just snow and mudding get the detroit, but it you mainly drive pavement and snow then limited slip. Auburn has a high preformance limited slip with agressive clutchs and stuff

Well it looks like a locker I didnt see pandas post

Also eaton! look at them there should be auto lockers that dont lock up when your turning

hes in washington. and thats what i mean about the ls in the snow. its for the every day driver. your actually better off with a full locker. and the detroit only acts like a locker under load.

I would do alot of research on a locker, if a locker acts like a posi you may want to rethink that in the snow, I really do not know anything about a locker, but I would not want the poor guy in the ditch, thats all.

I really like selectable lockers, just remember that ARB is the only one that won't void the warranty if you are running oversize tires.

i think eaton e lockers also wont void the warrenty for that. but again with arbs they are pricey and you need on board air and a tank. but hey then you have to refill your tires and what not as well.

the expy is the wifes rig and spends most of its time being a school bus and it is for mild off roading..

but a detroit would be a choice but as i understand it over size tires void the warranty..

eaton is very exspensive compared to the true trac..

as far as lockers go in the rear they are fine
but in the front people say they can't steer on ice?

who sells the detroit?

was just reading about the detroit locker and it is designed for off road use only, and warranty is void if ran on highway cost 719 for our axel

looks like the true track is the best for the money at 509 and it is gear locked no more clutches to wear out so should be good

Nope, Eaton makes it very clear that they won't warranty the elocker if you run oversized tires.

haven't played with a locker on my expy yet... but on my old 97 f150 I had a detriot turning the 38x15.5 swampers and never had a problem driving from NJ to NY many times and I live in the snowbelt of the NE and I loved my locker

well my original plans were to go with a lock-right when I had the 4.88s installed but couldn't get it so I went with detriot and it held up great for me and the guy that bought it off me... he beat the crap outta that truck and axles are fine but the 4.6 non PI motor crapped out at 130K... but it was turning 38x15.5s for the last 60K

If the Tru-Trac is what is put into the Chevy trucks, I would be cautious of using that in snowy conditions. Why do I say that? It is all in how it is locking up. I was watching a video of them showing the different locking axles (limited slips, Tru-Trac, Detroit, and an open differential) and watching the Tru-Trac, it was an open differential until the wheel started to slip and then you would watch it engage and it would literally spin the other wheel on dry concrete. Now, if you are in the snow, that action is very likely to break both of those wheels loose and if you have ever experienced the LS engaging in our trucks in snow with too much gas, you have seen the traffic coming at you. Atleast with the LS in our trucks, you can feel the LS starting to engage and can back off the gas. This will just lock up on you and away you go. I'm sure it is great on dry ground or when in the nasty stuff, but I can see it creating havoc for someone that is not used to it or that is in a snowy condition. Atleast with a selectable locker, you can choose when it is engaged and pick a good time for it to be locking in. Then, once the axle is locked, all is good.
