An issue with my new to me 2000 XLT. My 98 has the 2WD,A4WD,4HI,4LO switch. The 2000 just has A4WD, 4HI, 4LO. Though it feels like the front is engaged all the time. Also, the rear axle will scrub the inner tire when I turn sharp on dry pavement. Sort of like a locker would. Perhaps it has a locker, not sure.

The tires on it are some really agressive knobby things that are junk. I have the wheels from my 98 with standard tires that I am going to put on anyway this weekend.

I never really used the A4wd on my 98, so I don;t know how it acts. I assumed it would be like 2wd unless I started slipping. Could this be because the tires are jacked up, causing it to stay locked in? I haven't had time to really get into it, so this weekend I'll swap the tires and then try to figure it out.

The 2000 expys lack the center axle disconnect so the front differential, driveshaft and axles always rotate with vehicle motion. Maybe this is what you feel?! Its just the power is not applied via the transfer case unless it senses wheel slip.

You can pull fuse #104 under the hood (30amp) which will disable the 4wd to see if what you feel is it going into 4wd or just the extra drag.

I found my stock rear diff traction lock unit is also very tight. It will spin inside wheel also on tight turns fairly easy.
