I've got the 2004 5.4L 2V engine. Will it vary the timing according to the octane I'm using?

I ran 87 for the first two tanks, and 93 for the last three. I'm checking mileage on every tank, but it hasn't settled down so I can't swear to any improvement.
mostly city driving with one out of town trip. but it's a big city, so every trip has me on the highway for a bit.

Good deal Joe you’re doing it right. Yes, it will retard or advance the timing just enough to keep spark knock away. I don’t expect any knock using 87 and zero for above that. As tight as these engines are it may take awhile to get it loosened up to give better MPG than when new.

that's good news. I just got this one, at 96000 miles. it was well taken care of as a fire truck and probably an admin vehicle at that since the interior, especially, looks showroom new. you told me what i was hoping for; that the computer gives the motor all the advance it can handle - once the computer settles down, i can calculate whether any increase in mileage is worth what i pay for the 93 octane. assuming i can keep my foot out of it. driving a police package 5.4L can be fun!
