I wanted to reply here since it received some notice, but no answers

In general the transmission seems to require the HX in order to come to temperature (outside of a place like FL, TX, AZ, Dubai, etc)

The transmission only really produces heat when the torque convertor is locked up (which only happens under load)

Because of this, just cruising around doesn't really do anything.

Without the heat you run the risk of blowing a seal from the viscosity of the oil being too thick

Because of this, I have decided to retain the factory HX, but I will be changing the following:

- Delete coolant thermostat and loop the engine coolant directly to the HX
- 180*F Thermostat
- Larger Radiator
- Transmission Oil Cooler + in-line thermostat that won't open until 180*F (Derale 25792)

The attached is a retarded picture of what I am envisioning

I will document the process when I dig into it.

Following this video as guidance, and upping the ante with additional cooling mods

Update - did radiator, thermostat, coolant loop to trans HX, and spark plugs yesterday - issue with mating this hose/it doesn't quite fit. Probably going to chop it and finish with a piece of hose and a pair of band clamps.

Interesting. I see what your doing . But the idea of blowing a seal 'cause it's too cold is a bit of a reach imo. Trucks are used up north in sub zero temps without suffering any abnormal seal failure that I'm aware of.

For sure - I would assume they retain the HX so the coolant would be warming them but I hear you. I'm making the assumption that oil viscosity would cause issues; it might not.

Well that was a pain in the ass - but I got it.

Wound up having to sleeve the inside diameter and bridge the two pipes with some 1.8" radiator hose and clamping the **** out of it. So far so good, will report back if anything changes.
