I have a 2011 expedition EL, I am going to get a superchips or edge tuner, which one should I get. I have a K&N filter with the gots mod, do not plan on doing exhaust or any other performance mods. Thoughts?

personal preference...may depend on how much variation in tuning you want to achieve..most have edge but i believe most are 1st gens...i have superchips vortex and couldnt be happier...others are dialing in for a very specific tune...but i have learned from this site that it would be best to get a custom tune specifically from your truck to get exactly want you want...cost about the same depending on programmer...CTS and edge seems to be the 2 ppl get for the custome tune...superchips is canned tuned only...meaning you cant customize it other than what superchips has programmed...

I have an 11 as well and have the superchips cortex. I am still playing with the different tunes on it, i am on the performance tune right now. I am not unhappy with it-but not ecstatic either. Imam happy that it appears to have straightened out my shifting some. I have not done any other mods yet-but will probably be doing Gott's if I do not just get a CAI. I had the Volant on my F150 and was impressed. Did you notice a difference in the Gotts on your 11 and any pointers. I went from a 3.73 to a 3.31 and the difference is bigger than I expected. But still absolutely love the new one.

The gotts mod made a little difference, not huge but easy and cheap to do. Axle ratio change would be great but I have a 4x4, too expensive.

I just read this on the EDGE site:
Ford Expedition 2009 2010 5.4L + 37.0 HP + 50.0 lb-ft

No way those are gains from merely a $367 tuner?!
If so, I'm buying one tomorrow! :)

That is probably a reading at the engine which is most likely cut in half once it reaches the tires. I have had tuners in all my diesels and it was unreal how much power it unlocked but I think on gas engines it is smaller. I plan on getting one for a little mileage help an any small power boost I can get.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the major advantage of a tuner that is adjust the tranny shift firmness and when it shifts? Doesn't this improve both acceleration and tranny life? That is the reason I am looking at one. I know they give a few more horsepower, but to me the biggest improvement would be in the tranny and throttle response. Or I could be totally ill informed.

No love for HyperTech? They claim +35 hp on the 87 tune for your model years. Being that I'm a 2008, I only get +26 hp. Is it a real 'kick in the pants' feel? No. But it definately improves overall drive ability and SLIGHTLY better mpg. I need it more for tire size correction when the larger meats go on. Helps the tranny from hunting too!

Dib52- You did most of the things I want to do to mine. Did you get before and after numbers from the install of the HyperTech? Thats the exact unit I was looking at. That and a AFE CAI, and a catback. I figure it all combined might not net me a ton of HP but a health kick and a good sound. I regularly tow a 5000lbs truck on a double axle trailer.

True numbers?? Not exactly. Never really had a base line. Cat back went on before first fill up at the gas station. About 200 mi on the ticker after rolling off the lot, the mods began. Ran with just the exhaust for about 4 months while the Expy was still breaking in, think I was getting somewhere in the neighborhood of 17 mpg(probably about the same as stock). Next was the K&N FIPK, great sound, better breath, maybe about good for 1 mpg. Then I threw the HyperTech at it, biggest improvement by far. Not necessarily the best mpg increase, but drive ability is so much better. Increased throttle response, better shifting, adjusted rev limit, and has the ability to correct tire size when I get the new ones, still waiting on them. In this configuration, I remember seeing 20+ mpg, I was ecstatic. Also note, I have the 3.73 rear, so mileage was gonna suck anyway. I need the rear because I normally have 6000lbs of boat behind me.
After getting all the power I could out of engine mods, I blew the mpgs when I put the lift(Truxxx 3/2) on. I lost about 2 mpg due to wind drag. On my most recent trip down to the Texas coast, I was getting anywhere from 17.6-18.2 mpg depending on how fast I wanted to push it(speed limit 75). That's about the best after numbers as everything sits to this day. I'm prepared to lose more mpg after the new tires(33/34 inch), but so be it. If I want mpg, I'll take the bike!

So, if these hp claims are pretty true, this seems like a no brainer.
I have noticed improvements with my CAI and catback...but a 10% increase in hp for less than $400?
And as you said, the extra power will be nice. But it's the EX's stumbling for gears when driving through varying conditions that drives me crazy.
I don't need one that allows me to manually change shiftpoints because I am sure I will merely screw it up. So, why HyperTech over the others?

* I did notice the Edge tuner only comes with a 1 year warranty; Hypertech is lifetime. Plus, neither seems to work on Mac's. :(

Well, I rolled the dice and placed my order.
Autoanything has 15% off until the 15th.
So, I got the Hypertech Max Energy for $288.

For that price, I felt it was worth it!

I agree, my trany double shifts a lot when I am just driving normal, it is smooth but it seems off to me. I think the programmer will take care of that, the extra hp is just a bonus.

I think the first part will be a tuner. The ability to adjust settings from the get go and the extra power/milage/better tranny function. I was thinking on a SC Cortex, but the HyperTech sounds pretty good to. Thanks for the help.

Wow, can't believe you lost 2mpg on the lift, I already have the 33" tires and plan on the lift but my concern is having to fill up so much, not the money just a pain, I drive to the ranch a lot, I guess I better get the programmer quick. Why did you go with the hypertech, great product but it seems to have less hp gain compared to the superchips or edge. I want as much input as i can get before making my purchase. I know I don't want some off brand deal, I want a warranty backed by a big company, so I know it will be one of the big 3 companies. Also, I really don't want to mess with the exhaust. Thanks for your input.

The lifetime warranty on the Hypertech is what sold me.
They are all within $50 of each, with the Hypertech being the least expensive.
But to me the extra 1-2 hp and 5-8 ft lbs of torque means nothing after the one year warranty runs out on the other two. ;)

I have a Edge and love it on Level 3 but I looked at and talked to SCT reps about the iTSX at the Ford Nats , it seems like a good deal and the abiltity to custom tune after ( if you mod later ) is really nice!
