What is this thing on the bottom of my vehicle

Hi,

What is the rubbery brownish thing attached to the exhaust pipe near what appears to be the catalytic converter? It sticks down relatively low.

It's a 2018 Expedition Limited.

But actually since it is hooked up to the exhaust my guess is that it is probably a vibration damper, which helps keep the cabin quieter.....

It's a dampener if I'm not mistaken.

Looks like a rubber mount/hanger, wrapped in something. Anything directly connected to the exhaust system is going to have rubber/vibration dampening qualities.

NVH - one of the many things they learned over the years. I would guess this is more for the V word, since there's alot of thermal expansion and other things going on with exhaust. It likely dampens out some of the potential resonant frequencies that may be problematic.

I was investigating the damper on mine and it almost seems like it's full of sand or beads when you shake it back and forth. Anybody else have a similar observation?

Vibration/resonance dampener, as noted above. Anyone that owned a GM full-sized current generation that had the "cabin pressure" issue is familiar with those. Glad that Ford learned that lesson BEFORE they put the vehicle on the road.

I've seen these dampeners way back on my 1994 Roadmaster Station Wagons! They've been around for years... They do their purpose, and cut some vibrations..
