Hey guys sorry if this is the wrong place for this but I was just wondering about this. My parents have a broken down 2002 xlt triton v8 expedition and were looking to sell it on craigslist. we really have no idea what it should go for or if it should just be scrap or whatever.

Based on what they told me it does not run. They had just recently gotten a new fuel pump for it and the guy said it either "threw a rod" or it was a timing chain, they never got it officially looked at. it had about 170000 miles on it. The ac/ heater works and everything else is in decent condition, no accidents or major dents / flaws. any suggestions on this would be appreciated.

Well if it threw a rod, there is a chance that there is a hole in the block, or that the block is cracked. If it is a timing chain, it is salvageable but not a very easy fix. Honestly I would say post it for like 800 bucks, but someone is going to come along and offer you 500. Make sure to specify that the buyer needs to trailer the truck. I would take that just to get rid of it. Some people think that you might include that in the purchase (people are idiots). We just bought a running 2000 with 180k on the clock for 1600. Hope that helps.

You can probably get 5-600 for it at the junk yard. Being in Las Vegas there's a large impoverished part community who probably would have no complaints about doing a motor swap and possibly flipping it or getting a solid ride for themselves so I'd try craigslist first. Put it up for like 900 and mention its clean but not running and the issues it's having. Also be sure to put that you know it's worth 600 in scrap so no low ballers. That'll keep the scrapers away. You can also try and list it on eBay motors as a not running as is. Someone may want it just for spare parts.

Off topic a bit but I lived in Texas for a year and you'd be amazed how much more expy's go for down south than in the north. Of course their mainly rust free but still. I paid 2300 for my 98 with 115k on the clock, clean, runs great. I could probably drive it to Texas, polish up my rims and sell it for 4k all day.

Thanks for all the answers guys! I will pass along the info. It's just been sitting in the driveway and someone stopped by asking about it. He had offered 500 so it seems like you guys are right on the money.

All depends how much the person wants to get rid of the fuel bill...

I agree though, south trucks usually are worth more to people. I live in the rust belt, so prices for trucks are usually lower anyways.

It's not even just trucks. I live in New England. It's salt heaven around here and a rusted but solid 4x4 1/2 ton pick up would sell for as much or more as a spotless one down in Texas would. It's something about the Expeditions they love down there. Tahoe's also but expeditions more. This was 2010 and I'd drive by the used lots and see 2000 models with 200+k (Texas is big lol) selling for 12 grand. I read in a car magazine a few years back that something like 25% of Expy sales are in Texas. That's why they introduced the 3rd gen one at the Houston auto show not Detroit or NY where most new models premeir.

5.4, 4.6, 4wd, 2wd all may make a difference. I know the motor may be shot but the pcm and other hardware vary by motor. The overall condition and if its rust free can make a big difference.

I would be willing to pay more for a 4wd, 5.4 that was completely rust free if I was in the area. You may even get more from a salvage yard for the value in parts?!

It doesn't appear your parents are in any hurry to sell. I would list it for higher and if it does not get any interest in a few weeks lower the price.
