Hi Guys,

My truck has been acting a little suspicious and may be an electrical issue. The dash warning lights for the TPMS, door ajar and brake come on, beep and go back off. It seems to cycle, but not consistently. I have also noticed that the headlights do not turn off while parked, the ac/heated seat buttons do not work and the liftgate will not open, and the turn signal indicators just blink in a slow inconsistent pattern.

I have checked the fuses, got a new battery, checked the alternator and now I'm afraid its either a hidden fuse, some sort of module, or the GEM.

Any ideas?

I did find a thread for door ajar that pointed at the radio control module...maybe, but i have an aftermarket Alpine unit.

Also, I plugged in a cheap aftermarket phone charger - could that be?

Thanks,

John

I heard of one guy that hooked his battery up backwards and got some unusual results. Said that the radio started listening, the headlights would cast shadows and the horn sucked instead of blowed! ;-)

Humor aside, it sounds like a broken wire / loose connection type of a thing. First look around under the dash to see if there is any evidence of someone doing any wiring work, then pay attention to any symptoms that come together. One that might happen is the door ajar light and the rear door acting differently.
The owners manual will tell you what the various fuses power up which might point to a good fuse that has a loose connection and works just fine as long as it has a connection.

That's funny. I like it.

Appreciate the humor and the possibilities swagonmaster. Is there more fuses hidden somewhere besides the kick panel and engine compartment? Do you think relay or module?

You can forget the fuse idea as the source of the problem. When you trip a circuit breaker at home does the circuit still work on and off?

I would look up the wiring diagrams and see if all those things have a common ground. Ground connections easily can cause the problem you are describing, so either go spend an hour digging through the diagrams looking for one in common, or go tighten every ground connection you can find under the dash. I am not familiar with the computer systems on these trucks enough to tell you if all those things route through the body control module. Electrical gremlins are my worst fear in vehicle repair. Good luck!

As posted before, add on items like aftermarket stereos, or your phone charger, cause wacky symptoms. . Only the first edition expeditions have a gem module, so right off the bat you can rule that out. My bet is some module is acting up, or one of the wires you tapped into for the aftermarket stuff, is causing your grief. Keep us posted what the electrical shop finds.

No solutions yet, but they said they had to clear all the codes from me pulling fuses and they have to drive it for a bit to see what comes back.

Must be bad voojoo in the air. It was a little wet last night here in Daly City, along the coast. Moisture got into my Gem module again. This time my fan motor turns on and stays on, when I turn off key. I've sealed around my windshield twice but alas the gremlins are back. Sitting here at the lake with battery disconnected, sure glad I keep a few tools with me.

No, you just need to seal around the glass. Ford did a real poor job of sealing from the factory, and moisture gets in and drips into gem box and fuse box above drivers feet. Usually it's just my stereo that stops working when I put it in drive. Last time I crawled under there, and saw how tough it was to pull plug on Gem module, I left the plug alone. It's usually ok after I seal the window, but not lately.

I hate heat, that's why I live near San Francisco. You can have the 100 degree plus days. It rarely gets above 85 degrees here in Daly City. Tourists never complain of our fog, they know the hell their returning to later that week.

Report from the Auto Electric guys. They originally said it was the GEM module. They replaced that only to have that fried out after a few minutes running. Now they are saying its the instrument cluster that fried the GEM module, so both were bad? A little BS flag has gone up. What do you guys think?

First off if they said they replaced a Gem module on a 2008 expedition, then they need to be hanged! Gem modules only came on first edition expeditions. Later models use a different setup. Is your year and model on your first post correct? Sounds like you need to find a different shop, and get ahold of consumer affairs regarding that shop. You have a dead short somewhere that will require an expert auto electrician to sort out. Good luck.
