Which expedition to buy?

I want to buy an expedition as a good reliable family vehicle. Is there any certain years or engines to stay away from? Thanks

What is your budget? That will be a big factor in my recommendation. Is there any specific features that are a must have?

In what way?

Other than the tight engine/firewall clearance I've had no issues at all working on my 97, one of the easiest vehicles to work on for all the cars I've owned in my time.

Hi Gents i'm in the same boat with this question. I'm going to be in the market for a new/used Expedition coming from a 1997 Tahoe. Budget will be about 10-20k.

My Dad owns a 03 Eddie Bauer wedgewood blue that i fell in love with. But i also worked at a ford dealer for awhile and got to drive some pretty nasty 2010 Expedition Maxx and King ranches.

My real question boils down to this. I'm currently permanently disabled with 2 blown knees and herniated disks in my back. How hard are the new trucks to work on(2nd gen vs 3rd gen). I prefer doing work myself but i have feeling those days are over. Also ride comfort. My back sucks on long car rides and would like to be able to take the family out more often. The Tahoe is god awful.

Having owned both a 2nd generation, and a 3rd, I would recommend the 3rd Gen if comfort is your main concern. The 3rd Gen seats are more supportive in my opinion. Also, I believe they're about equal in terms of accessibility for maintenance. Something you may want the 3rd generation is for the power tail gate. That way you want have to pull it down and potentially hurt your back.

The good thing about the Expedition is that it was never a groundbreaking vehicle. Pretty much every part of the truck was already well proven in the F150. There are no 'lemon' years for the Expedition, so it's most important to find a truck that was well maintained and hopefully from a region of the country where rust isn't a huge issue.


I've always felt that 'real trucks' had metal bumpers and solid axles, so I'm partial to Gen 1 trucks. But they are obviously getting harder and harder to find in good shape.

Agreed, if nothing else, my 1st gen is just as tough to work on as my folks' 2nd gen as far as space goes. Not to mention the suspension is less complicated (and parts are less expensive) in 1st gens.

I am also partial to 1st gen's. We have had 3 come through my family and none have ever had major problems. For the guy whose budget is 5-6k, you are looking at a nice 1st gen for that money. To the guy with the 10k budget, 2nd gens can be found around that price range.

If you want a truck with truck-like qualities, 1st gen is the way to go. If comfort and more family oriented qualities are at the top of the list, 2nd or 3rd gen.

Anything in the engine bay and under carriage is harder to work on. Spark plugs and cops are a nightmare. Second gens are easier to work on imo.

5-6k can buy a 2nd gen.

Fink I'd recommend a 2nd gen navigator. Seats are the most comfortable I've had yet.
