Your vehicle’s owner’s manual will have the recommended oil type and viscosity.

I’ve always believed synthetic oil is better than semi-synthetic, if it meets the manufacturer’s specification (especially for cold-weather start-up and operation).

All Expeditions come from the factory with the Motorcraft Blend. If you are changing regularly(less than 7K) full syn is overkill. The Motorcraft Blend is rated pretty well by 3rd party testers. I get my oil changes from my Dealer for free. Cost extra to do full synthetic. If you are going longer intervals or towing everyday, sure Synthetic makes sense. Otherwise stick to the Blend.

Penzoil Ultra 5w30 with Motocraft FL500S oil filter every 5k miles. I've been running it since new and I have over 50k miles now.

Have used Castrol Magnatec with success in ecoboosts. Tends to have very good test results over on BITOG.

All oil brands have flashy marketing, but all are similar in the end. The Oil Specification (the odd letters and numbers) is what you are looking for, not the brand. Also, regular oil performs the same as synthetic as synthetic is modeled after regular oil. The benefit of synthetic is it lasts much longer. Ford recommends semi-synth probably because its lasts throughout the recommended oil change period and is slightly cheaper.

I would still change out full synthetic oils at no more than 4k miles for ultra engine protection and makes the engine last even longer. Oil is rated based on standardized testing, the quality, durability, additive packages, etc differ by oil type and brand. There are FS oils that will not perform as well as some Blended. It’s all about the certifications.
As for 4K miles, that is purely your subjective opinion, many oils can and do perform just as well at 6k miles as they do at 3k. How you use the vehicle also impacts wear. Long smooth drives vs frequent stops or engine cycles all important considerations.
The best thing to do, quality filter, quality oil based on engine manual specs. Additives should only be used to treat specific issues.

I was using Magnatec as well, but I think it's been rebranded as Castrol GTX full synthetic now.

I just prefer to use Full Synthetic oil and have always used full syn in all my vehicles from new and used and never had any internal engine issues and my oil always comes out super clean and no metel/sludge so I kinda keep everything the same . I also never tow anything in the expy and drive normal.

I would also advise to add a JLT Oil catch can. Passenger valve to intake

You also keep referencing FS vs Regular, none of us have recommended anything less than Blended. Do your homework. Most highly rated blends lose VERY little in protection to good FS, and are better than some FS. The Motorcraft Blend is one of those well rated Semi-Syns.

If you are changing every 4K, and spending for FS, you are wasting money, especially since you are not doing anything high stress.

I will add that I also use 93 gas so I guess im extra. I spare no expense.

I know synthetic blend is not regular oil. I just mistakenly keep calling it regular in my posts on this thread.

Regular oil would definitely be conventional oils.

Loki - have you done any oil analysis on these ecoboost engines? I wouldn’t be surprised if we were good for anywhere from 8-10k miles depending on use. Personally I use a 6k change interval but its probably excessive.

I believe some have. I just got a Blackstone oil analysis kit so at the end of winter when it's ready for a change I'll have it analyzed. For 30 odd bucks, if you do your own changes, I think it's a good datapoint to have.

Full synthetic also helps with limiting carbon buildup over time on the valves
