Going to change the transfer case fluid out this weekend, and the shop that did it previously used 75W-140 gear oil instead of Mercon LV. Is there anything I should look for or do to get the gear oil out before filling with Mercon?

......... why in the world did they do that? Gear oil does not belong with those clutches and they had to know they drained transmission fluid out.

Because they’re idiots and I didn’t catch it when they did it three years ago. They did the same thing for the front diff.

I’ll know for sure when I drain it this weekend.

That said, is there any way to flush the oil residue out before I refill it? Will I damage anything if I just refill with ATF?

I would just put atf in it it will be fine. You can't get all that out anyway without dissembling it

Thanks. That's what I thought, but wanted to make sure. Luckily I run it in 2H 95% of the time, so the clutches aren't engaging much.

Gotta love correcting stupid mistakes. That's why I'm back to doing my own work again.

Many old t cases took that heavy oil so they just ASSUMED !

Probably, but Ford lists Transfer Case fluid for the ESOF and Mercon LV for the torque-on-demand T-cases.

I suspect they were just being lazy.

From the manual: ESOF takes XL-12 Transfer Case fluid, torque-on-demand takes Mercon LV.

From the information I have gathered the XL-12 has been discontinued and LV is to be used in its place. I was having a hard time locating the XL that’s when I discovered the change.

Well, I drained the t-case and Mercon LV came out! Guess the previous shop just coded it to 75W-140 for ease of billing. Dodged a major bullet on that one!

Sadly, I sheared off a pan bolt on the transmission from over torquing, but that’s another thread!

I am having the same issue locating the XL-12. Where did you get that information? I am worried that LV will damage the transfer case.
