So I'm trying to figure out how to get Apple Carplay working on my new 2016 Exp with Sync 3. I thought it was supposed to support it. It doesn't seem to be updated to the latest version. Says current version is 2.0 and I did the automatic system updates and it doesn't do any update.

Brad,

Check out this link: https://support.apple.com/kb/index?..._searchbox_main&feedType=suggested&position=1

It says that you first have to be an an area that supports car play. I get the screen you have pictured above when I connect by cable.

I find nothing but radio stations and audiobook players in the App Store that say the are carplay apps. Since I have a radio and satellite in my truck I can't ever see using any of them.

It looks like carplay is just using Siri through your truck's system.

Set up CarPlay
  1. Make sure that your car or stereo supports Carplay.
  2. Plug your iPhone into the CarPlay USB port. The USB port might be labeled with a CarPlay icon or a smartphone icon. If the CarPlay Home screen doesn’t appear, select the CarPlay logo on your car’s display.
    • If your car supports CarPlay over a wired solution, plug your iPhone into the USB port of your car. The USB port might be labeled with a CarPlay icon or a smartphone icon.
    • If your car supports wireless Carplay, press and hold the Voice Control button on your steering wheel to set up CarPlay. Or make sure that your car is in wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode. Then on your iPhone, go to Settings > General > CarPlay > Available Cars and select your car. See your car's manual for more information.
  3. Make sure that your car is running.
  4. Ask Siri for what you need. You can do this in a few ways:
    • Touch and hold the Home button on your iPhone until Siri appears on your stereo display. Then ask what you need.
    • If your car has one, press and hold the Voice Control button on your steering wheel. Then ask what you need.
Get help
If CarPlay doesn't work like you expect, here’s what you can check. After each step, try using CarPlay again.

  1. Make sure that Siri is turned on.
  2. Restart your iPhone and your car. Depending on your car, you might see the CarPlay Home screen when you turn it on. If you don't, look for the CarPlay logo on your car’s display.
  3. If possible, connect your iPhone to a different USB port in your car.
  4. Try a different Lightning to USB cable. Make sure that the cable is certified.
  5. Update to the latest version of iOS.
  6. Check your car’s manual for help. You might need to install firmware updates for your stereo.
Learn more about CarPlay and driving and navigating safely.

Here is some more info. Can you play your music from your phone on your car entertainment system? If you are it is working.

Get help connecting your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with your car stereo
You can connect your iOS device with a compatible car stereo using Bluetooth, a USB cable, or CarPlay. If you can't pair or connect your iOS device with your car stereo, or you don't hear audio playback, learn what to do.

If you're using Bluetooth
  1. Check your car stereo's user manual for how to pair with a Bluetooth device.
  2. On your iOS device, swipe up to open Control Center, then tapios8-bluetooth_icon.pngtwice to turn Bluetooth off and back on.
  3. Restart your iOS device.
  4. On your iOS device, unpair your car stereo. On your car's display, unpair your iOS device and any other devices. Restart your car and your iOS device, then pair and connect again.
  5. Update your iOS device.
  6. Install any firmware updates for your car stereo.
  7. If you still can't connect, contact Apple Support.
If you're using USB Playback
  1. Restart your iOS device and your car.
  2. Connect your iOS device to a different stereo USB port (if you have one).
  3. Try a different Lightning to USB cable.
  4. Update your iOS device.
  5. Install any firmware updates for your car stereo.
Try playing audio from a different app. If you can't play audio from a third-party app, contact the app developer for help. If you can't play audio from an Apple app, contact Apple Support.

If you're using CarPlay
Many newer model cars support CarPlay—providing a safer way to use your iPhone in the car. To use CarPlay, you need an iPhone 5 or later with iOS 7.1 or later. Some features (like turn-by-turn navigation) aren't available in all regions. Learn more about how to set up and use CarPlay.

If your car supports CarPlay over a wired solution, plug your iPhone into the USB port of your car. The USB port might be labeled with a CarPlay icon or a smartphone icon.

If your car supports wireless CarPlay, touch and hold the Voice Control button on your steering wheel to set up CarPlay. Or make sure that your car is in wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode. Then on your iPhone, go to Settings > General > CarPlay > Available Cars and select your car. See the owner's guide for your car for more information.

This may be obvious and if it is I'm sorry, but you have to connect your vehicle to your home or office WIFI in order for the update process to work. If you cannot not connect by WIFI you will not get any updates and the dealer will have to do it for you.

Can you go to Settings on your Sync 3 and find the Update area and see what version Sync you have? I have mine connected to Wifi and it says I am on version 1.0.

So you get this screen when you connect your phone : maxresdefault.jpg

What I mainly want it for is Maps and Messages. I get apps to load on my Sync 3 like Spotify and Ford Pass and stuff but I don't get this screen shown above. I guess it's only Sync 3 in 2017's or something.

2016 Edges did not have a hub that had the Apple certified chip in them. I swapped my hub for a supported one. My guess would be that the 16 Expy is the same way. If you are at 2.0, you have the software level you need. Verify you see Android Auto in the Settings menu. Do you see a CarPlay icon beside it, if not, your hub doesn't support it, and will need to be swapped.

You won't see this until you accept the connection on your phone. You will see the top of the screen on your phone go blue, and CarPlay come up on the screen.
