I understand that most people don't know diddly about the cars of today and are at the mercy of the "mechanic". What really gets under my skin is a so called "mechanic" that doesn't justify the diagnosis with numbers to back up his/her claim.
If he had told you the compression range is 150-165 psi and all cylinders are reading 90 psi or lower dry and with an oil shot, those are facts. Backfiring can be an indication of timing issues. To be 100% certain we either take the timing cover off and verify or we hook up a scope and compare signals from the crank and cam sensors. In a sense giving the client a little education on what is going on.
Firing order is calculated by the ecm based on crank and cam positions on cylinder #1 - firing out of order - I'd ask them to explain that one. Waveforms on a scope will/will not verify it.
Bedrck may be coming back in spirit!
