Well I think I am going to go with 3.73 gear ratio for my expy. Still half considering 4.10's but worried I would be unhappy with the higher rpms on the hwy. Anyways I have always used ford gear sets in my mustang but they are relatively cheap. (8.8 rear) The ford gear sets also included oil, friction modifier and shims. While searching for gears for the 9.75 I found the ford gears are crazy expensive. Has anyone used some of the other available gear sets? Opinions on them? Recommendations?

Haven't done them on expedition but on my old.f150 I went with randy's ring n pinion.... wish I had cash to order my 4.88s... would have an extra set of 3.73....

they shipped good and helped a lot... had a shop in town install them for me... only problem I had was the original locker I ordered was on back order... didn't get told until gears shipped... but they overnighted me a better one and gave me a discount on it.... but don't have the funds right now to do gears.... hate this economy...lol

Does it still have overdrive?? My stang may be close to that but no longer have overdrive with C4 thats in it.

In the expy

3.55's about 2,000 in overdrive 70mph.
4.10's about 2,300

Stock size radials

Yeah the install is a PIA , I've only set up a Dana 44 in my Bronco, it worked but I think I'd pay someone next time

I have done my own in the mustang 8.8 several times and have been told the 9.75 is similar...just bigger. Maybe I will make video if and when I do it in the expy.

Says that their gear sets are used in NHRA, IHRA, ANDRA, SODA, SCORE, and NASCAR racing series.

Not sure how expensive Ford gear sets are but this seems reasonable.

The ford gear sets I have found are $700 plus. The motive gearset you provided link for is what I would expect to pay. Thank you. :)

I prefer a ford gearset but if I cant find any reasonably priced may go with motive.

Its really not that difficult. The only critical adjustments are pinion depth, backlash, and pinion bearing preload. In most cases you can use original size pinion shim and it sets the depth properly. That just leaves you with backlash and pinion bearing preload.. both relatively easy to set. Check gear wear pattern with gear marking paint. If its good, close up otherwise make the appropriate adjustments.
