Newbee Here, 2001 Expedition EB 5.4 4X4

Hi everyone,
I just got a 2001 Expedition EB 5.4
On my way home I stopped for fuel I was checking under the hood and I noticed a whistle coming from near the rear of throttle body. I giggled the hoses and it would go away, but the whistle would come back. then about 5 miles later the check engine light came on. It is giving code P0171.
I am guessing the code is due to the vac leak. It seems to run good, idle good. pick up good, but is getting terrible gas mileage. Just over 8mpg if the onboard computer is right.
It has a 355 gear
17" wheels
143,000 miles

Start with the PCV valve, goes from passenger side valve cover to the back of the TB. The elbow leading into the TB is a common cause for a vac leak. I coincidentally have been pulling about 8 mpg's the last few months, and used to get 11. I am thinking it is my O2 sensors being bad, but I cannot remove them to save my life. Something to look into.

You will get more giggles out of my spelling, not my strongest suit.

I am looking at the receipts that came with the truck. In may 2012 it had:
Inner and outer tie rods both sides, and an alignment.
Diff fluid changed 75W140SYN with “Limited slip additive”
Shifter bushing
1 Fuel Filter
8 Auto lite Dbl Platmum plugs
1 Air Filter
1 PCV Valve
7 Coil on Plug Boot
1 Ign Coil

In Dec 2012 it got
New tires
MAF sensor Mass Air Flow Sensor

And the trans was rebuilt by a reputable local shop 30K ago.

Yesterday I was in search of the vac leak. No luck. The hose on the PCV is new, correctly connected, also looks like a new boot on it too.
I was looking at the hose that comes out the top of the air intake where it meets the throttle body. It snakes around the rear of the motor thru a small canister of sorts then on to what where the EGR is (I think) “That hump behind the TB to the passenger side of the truck.” But I didn’t find any leaks.
While I was looking for this vac leak, that whistle came back. I searched high and low and then all of a sudden it was gone again. I didn’t do anything. It just disappeared again.
Moving it around seems to make a small change in the idle ……maybe, I don’t know. I am not 100% sure it’s a vac leak, and not an electrical whine. The whistle was present for about 20 minutes.
I also noticed that the larger hose that is connected to the Vapor Management Valve is flakey and collapsing. So I am going to change that.
The pitch of the whistle is high, like lots of vac leak or a pressure leak.
Any ideas?

I have the same "whistle" - it is somewhat random... but will almost go away with increase load at idle (either A/C or defrost coming on), or slightly increasing rpms...
No joy on finding origin or solution yet, either.

Increasing the rpm does not decrease the whistle, I think as the rpm's go up the whistle increases but its hard to tell because the motor drowns the whistle.

But I am thinking that if it were a vac leak it wouldn't come and go. ... would it?

I did notice that when I shut the motor off the whistle would continue until the motor came to a complete stop.

the code is P0171 only, not P0174.

Good point on the sounds being drowned out... will have to try to locate it again...

+1 on pcv valve as well as the line running to the back of the intake manifold.

When I built my intake and first started it up after installing it. I had a very loud whistle on passenger side. Couldn't find exactly where it was coming from so I just got a few more hose clamps disconnected all misc. hoses added clamps where I could and re-tightened all other clamps already installed. And no more whistle since going on a few months now.
