Mine had that too. It comes right out. Here's what I did. Sorry for the quality, it's dark in my garage right now.

And the piece I removed.

Awesome! How long was the piece of pipe? I bought abs and not PVC. This will work right?

It will have to wait until tomorrow afternoon. I'll take a better picture during the day also. I don't see why ABS wouldn't work.

Ok, here's a few more pictures. I tried to get one showing how the pipe stops in between the fender and inner fender. I also used a pipe with a thinner wall so I could squeeze it into the opening. Some people dremmel the opening bigger, I chose to squeeze in the pipe. It was basically just the pipe and coupler. And the coupler took some coercing to get on the intake. It was a tight fit.

It's hard to see it in those last 2 pictures but its right in the middle there. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Ran out of light today getting the pipe sanded down. Definitely need to borrow an electric sander!

What exactly does this mod do for you? The filter housing intake is still much smaller than the throttle body intake diameter, so you're still going to have a restriction in the air intake with the stock housing. The inlet to the filter housing needs to be AT LEAST as big as the throttle body intake, plus use a low restriction filter media. This mod just screams "rigged". If you want to solve this intake restriction issue take a look at the Volant cool air intake. It's inlet is the size of a shoe box. It also smoothes out the air flow from the filter housing to the throttle body itself. Or maybe the whole point of the exercise was what you can do to your air filter for under $5 ? At least spray paint the PVC pipe black.

It mainly removes this piece.

Which, while it has almost a 3" outlet, has less than a 2" inlet. Doing this mod removes that restriction while still getting cooler air from between the fenders as opposed to the warmer air inside the engine compartment. While it may not look as good as the Volant or K&N, if you search around on the F-150 forums, where this mod is more widely used since there are more F-150's out there, you'll see that a few guys have tested their own truck with this mod vs numerous others CAI's. The Gotts mod performed as well as or better than any CAI. In some cases it drew in colder air than some of these professional units. I looked at those off the shelf units, but other than looks, why pay the price when $5 will give you the same results. And if you want to pay that much just for looks, then why do the mod at all. It's for performance, and for a lot less money you can get the same performance, I don't see any reason to pay $250 for the same results $5 would yield. And as for painting it, why? I don't sit in parking lots with my hood raised. I have no reason to show off my engine bay, it's the 4.6L. I'm the only one that see's under the hood. If I painted it before installing, a lot of it would have been scraped off since its such a tight fit. Also, the flexing of the pipe, since its not perfectly round may have caused the paint to crack and flake off. Or I could have painted it while it was installed. Why risk the engine sucking in paint fumes, flakes or anything else when it isn't necessary? I may wrap some black heat tape around what's visible, but like I said I'm the only one who sees it.

rex450se: Where did you pick up the coupler, and what sizing was the coupler and pipe? Going to try and tackle this before we leave for a big trip to Niagara Falls in May, with camper in tow.

I picked up the coupler at Advance Auto and just bought a foot of 3" pipe from the local hardware store.

Thanks for the quick response. Was that an adapter coupler, or did you just stretch it to fit? What did you ask them for, or are they available in the aisles? I thought the couplers were available from HD... no?

It was just a 3" coupler, stretched to fit the intake. And it was tight. It was available in the isle with all the make your own intake tubing and stuff. You could probably get it at Home Depot or wherever also. I just thought this one looked nicer.

It definitely does, which is why I asked where you picked it up from--looks more like an intake hose than a toilet adapter. ;) Was there enough room left on the intake side to put another clamp on there? I'd just worry that the tightness of the PVC in the fender-well and movement of the motor, would work the coupler loose.

Places like Pep Boys usually has stuff like those couplers in stock. I've stopped by there a couple times to grab a coupler.

I've had it like this now for over 6 months and it hasn't moved. It's on there tight. Also it isn't round, there's a piece cut out so the clamp wasn't wanting to sit right so I just took it off.

Thanks for the clarification!

For the record, every time I see your huge sig pic, I stare at the truck for a while. Very nice setup you have going on there!
