I am looking to rent a u-haul car trailer to tow my 1974 oldsmobile delta 88 200 miles one way in a week or so. The Olds is big and heavy and I assume with car and trailer I will be around 7800 lbs. I've used the Expo to tow my utility trailer and boat many times, but I've never towed more than 4500 lbs.

Any insight would help. I typically drive the Olds on this trip, but due to mechanical issues it needs to be towed upstate NY this time around. I have the factory tow package as well on the truck

Thanks
Ed

Check their website to see if they approve the combination. I would want a receiver hitch instead of the bumper hitch that is included as the "tow package" on my 99. Don't be in a hurry to get there since your stopping distance is longer and enjoy the ride.

You know, there is a towing and hauling section in the forum. Weight is one question, length is another. Do you have the EL or not? Is it 4x4 as they are heavier and can tow less. How long is the trailer? Longer wheelbase is better for towing. If you have the 7 pin and 4 pin trailer light connector, you have the HD towing package and should be able to handle the weight you posted.

Here's my advice:

Going by the 3rd gen specs:

Std Expedition: 119" - can tow a 22' trailer safely
EL Expedition: 131" - can tow a 25' trailer safely

Depending on the type of hitch you use, you "may" be able to adjust those parameters a little. It would be a real good idea to read the following and / or do some research on safely towing a trailer.

I've towed a big block chevelle with gas, tools, food, and all the other crap you take to the track. Don't know how much it weighed. It pulled it fine (100 miles round trip). Needed extra distance to stop and didn't set any speed records but it pulled it fine. Go on the uhaul website and it'll tell you if your combo will work. Just an FYI you don't have to tell them you are towing a Delta 88. Just tell them you are towing a honda civic. The rules for Uhaul are stupid. Make sure you have a 4 pin connector (don't know if the newer expy's have 7pin and 4 pin on the same vehicle) adaptor. You can buy one at harbor freight for about 10 bucks

They may be stupid, but God forbid you have a problem and they find out you arent pulling a Honda Civic. Not sure thats a risk I would want to take.

They won't care. Who's to say you didn't load a honda. I wouldn't hesitate to tow what you are towing with a uhaul. To each their own though. Just call uhaul and ask them
