Front end popping and jumping

Im a newbie here, first time on. My folks gave me a used eddie bauer 2000 expedition. The front end makes a popping noise and jerks really bad when making a turn. I also hear a popping from the front drivers side while driving straight. I just want to know what could be causing this because i really need it fixed. It drove fine for a while and now its just loud and scary. I need some knowledge and i have been searching all over the web. Can anyone help me out with somewhere to start?

are you in 4hi, are your tires all exactly the same, any torn or open axle boots?

When you say torn or open axle boots is that something i can determine by inspection after removing the wheel? All tires are the same as well.

Jack the front end up and see if you can wiggle the wheel in ALL directions. If so....I suspect it's the front wheel bearing assembly based on your description.. It's a relatively easy fix. When my drivers side one was bad I was amazed at how much it would move....like the whole wheel was loose!

Next would be ball joint's, probably the lower ones if your have never been changed.

I'm assuming 4wd? did they make eddie bauer's in 2wd?
