Hi all -- I know it sounds like an electric razor -- I have a very loud buzzing coming from the area around my front injector on the passenger side -- I put a hose in my ear and it isn't coming from the alternator and it doesn't seem to be coming from any vacuum hoses. Here is a video (Click link below)

Holy crap, whatever that is, it does not sound good. What year is the vehicle? I just don't even know what would be spinning fast enough at idle to cause a noise like that. Does it change pitch when the engine revs or stay about the same?

In the passenger side valve cover is the PCV most likely it is pushed out of the valve cover

at least he says what engine Why do people just post something and then make you guess all the other information LIKE YEAR, ENGINE and MODEL. or do they think that just because it's an Expedition that all years are alike

One thing you could try would be to remove the fan belt and start the engine to see if the noise is still there BUT DON"T RUN IT VERY LONG

Thanks all -- with a hose in my ear -- I know that it is not the belts or even in the front area -- and also it is not the alternator.

It's a 2002 Expedition Eddie Bauer with 200,000 miles -- I will check if it changes pitch when I rev it up -- and yes that video was just at idle -- and the sound just started out of the blue today -- I did just add a quart oil last week -- though the oil had been changed recently at a dealership -- yet still it looked low on the dipstick -- but it looked fine inside on the dash's oil gauge.

The oil gauge on the dash doesn't indicate a varying pressure it only tells if there is or isn't oil pressure just like a switch either its on or off

Is this my PCV valve -- that hose looks bad! (click to make it larger)

I will check the PCV & the hose -- Thanks very much -- that seems very likely -- could adding a bit too much oil cause it to pop out? Also any info on what OEM part number to buy and what hose to get?

Thanks -- I am with you -- the oil sender's would break often on my old Jeep -- so I do follow that it is just pressure -- and likely not too accurate --I guess it should just point to middle like all the gauges.

I don't remember my PCV being that fat haha. I think that might be some kind of heat cover over the actual hose but they could have changed the design to a larger diameter between model years. Try spraying WD-40 or carb fluid in small amounts along the hose. If the revs jump up, there is a hole in the hose and it needs to be replaced.

Thanks for the tip! The dealership asked me if it was heated or not... there seems to be a lot of these -- the dealer said this part was number 6C324 -- but there are countless 6C324 with and without insulation -- as I played with it the noise stops when I push on the side of the pcv so I think I should also replace the gromet dealer said that was part number 6A-892 -- any advice I have a 2002 Expedition 5.4L Eddie Bauer

Holy crap this is good info, mine makes the same noise! Just not quite as loud.... Been doing it ever since I got it, it comes from the same area and I thought it was a pulley and was just going to wait until it got worse hahahaa

I use a clean new funnel -- backwards in my ear to locate where a sound is coming from.

Well I replaced the entire PCV assembly from the valve cover to the back of the intake. It was a bit tough cause you cannot see what you are doing due to the cowl, it is all by feel, but it isn't too hard unless you have big hands. If the noise goes away then that is probably the issue, or at least contributing to it.

I fiddled around with my PCV and that's definitely where the sound is coming from! Will clean or replace soon

Thanks ALL!

Yes - I changed my PCV Valve -- which was doing it -- but I also changed the rubber grommet and the hose $36 for everything --( $7 total) rubber grommet from dealership -- and OEM insulated (why?) hose with PCV from ebay ($29 total) -- now on to a cheap backup camera!

Power steering is usually only when you first start and when you turn the wheels. Also makes more of a screechy sound.

I don't see why that insulation is necessary. Mine is uninsulated and it has not melted through...

sounds like your power steering pump

had you read the previous post by the OP before you replied you would have read that he solved the problem by replacing the pvc valve and grommet.

his problem was not with the PS pump
