I am thinking of doing a complete crate motor swap into my 1997 Expedition 5.4. Has anyone done this and if so, what are the easy swaps? Would something like a Coyote work with if I had the wiring harness also?

You would definitely need the control pack for the Coyote crate motor. It includes the harness and ecu. It's supposed to be a wide motor, so you may have to do a bit of measuring.

From what I've heard, the Ford Motorsport guys are supposed to be pretty helpful with swap info. Contact them and see what they say.

Of course you know that this is a $8,000 + project.

you can get more torque with a properly built 5.4l 2 valve or a 3 v than you can get from a 5.0 coyote.
the control pack
the engine
you need brackets
you'll run into alternator location problems
steering pump issues
fitment issues even the 5.4l 4v engines had their fair share of install problems from ford.
I swap 6.2l engines in ford vehicles and im working on 1 and 7 more lined up after this mustang swap, you'll spend less money than a coyote kit.
still I don't think its worth it.
your top end flows poorly fix that on your 5.4 and you'll will be happy. with factory cams on a ported PI head bigger TB I can hit 390-400FT LBS @2700RPM
the 5.0 F150 motor only makes 322HP @ 5900RPM and 369 @ 4350RPM (Crank)

I don't mean to high jack the thread...but I posted a similar question months ago. I have a 99 with a 5.4 and 180k on the clock. I would love to have a daily drivable 400 lbs toque. I was thinking about a ford replacement motor from Ford itself. Can you make any recommendations? Thanks!

you need to port your 2 valve heads if you have a 99 NPI 5.4, swap the PI top end on it this/
it will raise the compression and offer better air flow. the PI heads need to be ported, a bigger throttle body CAI kit and short tube headers you can do this for less than $2500.
use what you already have find a PI donor top end, your battles are half way over by that point.
I also recommend 3 valve oil pumps.
factory PI cams are sufficient enough for 400 FT LBS of torque.

i think 99 mustangs got the PI head first and very late 99 trucks got the PI heads.
these heads flow more than NPI heads flow.

Great thanks. If I order a motor from ford say a dealership to install can I specify PI heads?

the dealer will put what ever engine that vehicle came with.
if you put a PI top end on your NPI motor you will need a tune. this is something I don't think any dealer will do.
sorry for the bad news but that's ford products for ya

Ok. Thanks for the information. I appreciate it. I have had 4 radiators replace in the last 4 years. Dealer has not been able to find the cause. So I am still driving with 188K on the clock until something finally gives way. I am planning on the worst...HAHa!

4 radiators? damn dude.

I know! Everything has been checked at dealer. Compression, over pressure of radiator, exhaust gas in the radiator. Everything normal. Last radiators i changed myself. I also checked radiator pressure and exhaust gas in radiator myself negative. I checked electrolysis also negative. I changed all radiator mounts this last time. So we will see.

Truck still runs great get 18 mpg on highway and at least 12 to 13 around town!
