Thanks to Racenut for giving me this idea yeeaaaarrrs ago. We exchanged PMs and since then I have been wanting to do this. But life and a whole lot of other things got in the way. Unfortunately I dont think he posts here anymore. but anyway...

So finally decided on getting Hella 500 FFs. Theyre cheap, matches my clear lamps and quite easy to install. Although I still have to wire them, they will be part of the high beams

I had a set of Hella 500 Black Magic (or whatever they were called) on my Mariner (what I sold to get my Expedition). I would drive 140 miles a day, 5 days a week and they were almost always on. I had them mounted low on a safari bar that way if it was snowing, I could turn on just the parking lights and those Hellas and not be blinded.

I've been wanting to get a set for my 1st gen and mount them where you have them. I was planning on going with the regular 500s for the cost, but I think I might go with the Blacks so they aren't so "in your face" when they aren't on.

Do it! The 500s are a perfect fit. Although I was also tempted to get 700s

And get one of these so you preserve the factory harness

You guys aren't worried about it affecting cooling mounted like that? How much excess cooling capacity do our trucks have?

I have no frame of reference whether it would be a big deal or not.

I'll keep an eye on it. I have a ScanGauge and can tell when the thermostat opens and closes (temp will go from 206 to 190).

I've been thinking about swapping out to the 2-core radiator anyway as a preventative measure.
