Somehow I went past the speed limiter?

I was driving on the freeway and I decided to do a little burst of speed to see how fast I could get from 70 to 100mph and somehow I ended up going a little over 105mph when the limiter is suppose to stop at 100. The truck kind of paused at 100 for a moment and then slowly started to accelerate past it. After slowing down I tried it again and this time it stopped at 100mph like it normally does. Anyone know how this happened? I was on a mostly flat surface.

interesting post. I am not sure how ford works on this. Some vehicles have several speed sensors, like the engine speed, trans speed even wheel speed.
These sensors communication to the ecu and it may slow down fuel supply, stop coil impulses or apply brake pressure. Given the lack of info on ford's speed limiters i cant think of anything unless the sensor was not working properly.

You didn't get rid of it with the custom tune?

After another test, it looks like the custom tune did get rid of it. It's just weird how it pauses at 100 and that's why I thought I still had it. I guess the expedition doesn't have much power at 100+ because it accelerates very slowly past 100. ELVATO or anyone else with their limiter removed, have you ever tried to test what the true top speed of the expedition is? I'm guessing around 120. I am going to test this some day when I have more open freeway, granted the expedition isn't very safe at high speeds, atleast I have some suspension and brake mods

Yea, mine pauses too. Even with tuning, there must still be something in there that cuts power after 100. You have the 5.4, I have a 4.6L. Based on "closed circuit" testing, mine goes about 106+ on a flat surface. On a hill, I think I got to 112.

It doesn't have the power to shift into OD.

I've heard of F150s going into the 120s, I think (with tuning of course.) Granted, I'd feel sketchier in an F150 than in an Expy doing those speeds. The Expys seem to be better planted.

The 98 my dad used to have shut down at 98 mph. It was embarssing when i went to pass my buddes 85 Chevy 4x4 3/4ton with a 6.2L and could barely get past him.

Yea, mine was in the 4k range when I hit 100. What is the size of your rear end?

My 98 would do 104 before the limiting would set in... it has 4.56 gears and 35 inch tires... its all stock other then those.... I had it up to 104 a few times on interstate 80 in Wyoming where its pretty flat and straight....

Looks like there's not much point to having the limiter removed... I can only get up to about 107mph. I think it's the engine that is too weak to make it go faster because it wasn't hitting the rpm limiter which is what makes most cars keep from going faster.

Actually, a good tune will keep you from hitting overdrive at wide open throttle. It may not be that the vehicle itself can't do it.

Well as my sig says it does have a custome tune... maybe I'll have to talk to Matt about it.. it's too bad he doesn't visit this forum anymore (probably due to all the bugs the site had/has)

3.31 I think, is there any way to check? It was going insanely fast.

Check the sticker on the inside of your driver door, it will have an axel code. Google the code and it will tell you what gears you're running. Mine is H6 so I'm running 3.73:1 Limited slip. H7 is 3.55:1 Limited Slip. I think two other ones are 6 and 7, which are 3.31:1 and 3.55:1 open diffs (respectively), but you may want to double check.

As far as top speed, I know mine is governed to 105. I could take it off with my programmer but I decided to limit it to my tires' speed rating.

With 99-06 the stock tire sizes and stock 3.73 rear ends, 4th gear would take you to close to 170-190 mph, if it was pushing out enough hp that is. I'm not too sure on what different rear ends would do specifically but a 3.31 rear end would push you to 220ish mph range in fourth given, again, you had the 1500 hp to do that ;) . 225 horse might get one of these Goliaths up to approx. 115mph but I could be wrong.

Expeditions are heavy trucks and I really must emphasize how dangerous it is to exceed the 112mph rated stock tires limits too. Let's not have a thread about how you flipped your Expys trying to push these limits too!

I am pretty sure you have a 4R100 in your truck. If so then a shift into OD at WOT won't be a transmission killer.
