so this week I haven’t been driving the expy like a rental and have been accelerating like a normal driver, what a difference in MPGs lol. I’ve been doing this experiment since my recent oil change and have been watching it rise and rise.

What's your drive like? I can only dream of getting that kind of mileage. Right now the lie-o-meter is sitting at 13.7.....

My drive is normaly 50/50 city and highway. Not usually heavy city traffic but more regular suburban/rural roads. I’d say change your air filter, mine was getting about that and just the air filter was an instant 1.5ish MPG.

Are you stuck in 4x4 auto? I leave mine in 2wd. I assume 4x4 auto is similar to fulltime awd which might lower your MPG? I'm new to expeditions so correct me...anyway,
I had a 4 hour mostly highway run with some stop and go for three separate accidents on the interstate...averaging 60mph because of traffic...but driving really easy today:

That’s pretty accurate. Drove from Virginia Beach to Charlottesville, VA and averaged 23.1. Cruise control 67mph. Seems to be her sweet spot

Not stuck just have the knob set there. this truck can break 18 MPG on a long highway run but that’s about my max it will achieve in 2HI. As of now the 17.2 is averaged between city and highway half and half driving.

I left one of the "mileage options" on the left side display as it was from new....and my mileage has crept up to my present Mileage-since-new of 17.9 mpg based on over 25,000 miles of driving. not bad considering that I have approx 2 dozen red lights each direction of my 92 mile daily commute........

Most individual tanks are now returning very close to 19mpg and that's with the AC set to "auto", the 4WD also set to Auto.....SWEET!!

Never hardly broke 13mpg with my two 5.4 Expys unless it was on a trip!

The best part is that I DO NOT PAY FOR MY GAS SO I DRIVE WITHOUT COST IN MIND!

I am loving the fact that I traded my Land Cruiser a smaller vehicle up to the EL, a much larger vehicle of course, and I'm getting much better MPG. Amazing. Curious as to why you guys run in 4x4A? I understand if the roads are wet or slick, but if it's dry, am I mistaken to assume leaving it in "awd" mode puts a little more wear on the drivetrain and possibly hurts MPG a little? Do you guys get torque steer when in AWD mode? My Land Cruiser was fulltime AWD with a transfer case for 4Hi and 4Lo. I can't count the number of times I wished I had a 2WD option to eliminate torque steer etc. I removed the front prop shaft on my Land Cruiser once and I LOVED how it drove in rear wheel drive mode.

I’m pretty sure the computer earases it after so long and moves forward chronologically and only stores so many past miles. Good question why do we run our trucks in 4A? I just do sometimes not sure why. I guess it’s there if you need it kind of thing. Or if you plan on flooring it and retaining max traction lol.

In 4A no power is sent forward until rear slippage is detected. It’s rear wheel drive until the system detects a problem. I believe the only way in which it’s armed in auto is the Hubs are pulled in and locked.

You sure? Mine handles differently (better) and consumes more fuel in 4A

How you drive can make a tremendous difference in the mileage. Try to get into your upper gears as soon as possible. Also accelerate like you have an egg under you foot. Look ahead and see what color the light is. If red coast to a stop. Use as little brake as possible. Keep speed under 60 mph. Then when you have done all the above and got you high mph number. Floor the son of a ***** and have some fun. LOL

No, in the "Trip #2" option(there are 3 different mileage options) it records & displays only 4 digits so every ten grand, it starts at zero miles again....but it doesn't take a genius to keep track and as you see, the total mileage is only 4 or 5 miles more then the Trip #2 displayed because I last reset this option on my way home from the dealer on the day I bought my truck. It's a great way to remove the guesswork out of "mileage since new".

Yes, running in 4A uses more fuel than not but I didn't buy a 4WD truck to drive around in 2wd so I leave it in 4A. How it uses more fuel, I don't know.

As I've mentioned before....my mileage is steadily increasing with tanks now in the 18's however I filled up yesterday morning so I've driven approx 146 miles so far and my mileage for this tank is 20.6....it seemed to take a jump up at around 15K and seems to be doing it again.....I believe that in another 6 months, my average daily mileage will be in the low 20's....and considering that my old 5.4's only got me 13....AND the massive added power of the twin turbo....yup, I like what Ford has done....

Yea I’m happy with the way mine is sitting now it’s achieving 17-18 MPG in 4A with mixed driving. I don’t have that many stop lights. The 5.4 is plenty powerful for me it’s faster than any old Malibu or standard sedan and the thing weighs 6,000 pounds. In 4A I’m pretty sure the hubs are locked to the front CV Axles so when power is needed it can be sent in the fly quickly. This means you have more drag since your cv axles have to spin with the wheels.

Wow, if you're getting 17+ with a 5.4, you really are doing very well and I'd be happy too since that's so much better than either of my 5.4's EVER got, even on trips!
