Im loving the pics. This kind of stuff is exactly what I'm setting up my expedition for. Thanks for sharing.

I've made this observation a couple times, on the Alpine Loop trip and the Eclipse Trip, I'm just as happy on easy backroads in my Expedition as I am on legit 4wheeling trails in my Explorer.

Once in Telluride, I noticed my tire took a gash. It didn't cut a cord, but it looks like it's down to the cords. I'm getting it replaced.

I finally got this tire replaced. I also decided to get another matching wheel and ANOTHER tire so I can do 5-tire-rotations and have a spare that matches.

After killing 2 mechanical style clutches this year, both while running the engine at about 4000 rpms for 4-5 minutes straight while climbing from Dillon, CO to the Eisenhower Tunnel, I decided to go with some electric fans.

First I considered piecing them together from other OE electric fans, like the Taurus or Lincoln Mark VIII, but I decided to go with the kit from Flex-a-lite (FLX-270). It has dual 15" diameter fans capable of 5000 cfm when on high and has all the brackets and variable speed controller in the kit.

The overall quality of the kit, I give it a B+. The fans, shroud and wiring seem to good quality, but the brackets left a little to be desired. I'm pretty sure I was either sent one wrong bracket, or they forgot one of the brackets and there was an extra (possibly for Lightning intercooler). So I had to get a little creative.

Here are the fans, ready to be installed:

One odd thing is that part of the install is to drill holes in the shroud and make a bunch of electrical connections. To me this is something that could probably be done at the manufacturer. But whatever, I know how to drill holes and crimp connectors.

I had an extra radiator laying around that I could get the fitment of the brackets right. I'm glad I did too. As you can see, I had to clearance the bracket to get around the upper fastener on the passenger side.

The driver side is a different story. This is the side I'm sure I'm missing the bracket. It should be a 2 piece bracket like the passenger side. So I had to get creative and I mounted this bracket directly to the shroud.
E90DBBC4-F5F0-4D40-912B-4228B4649303.jpg

But during install in the truck, the driver side bracket had to be further modified to clear the upper transmission cooler line. I had to grind down the top to clear it. And I couldn't get it in anyway with the driver side bracket installed.

Once installed, the wiring was pretty straight forward. I ended up using the temp probe through the radiator fins because the hose adapter was too skinny. I could have drilled and tapped the thermostat housing, but I want to make sure it worked before I took it to the next level.

Initial impressions are very favorable. Cold start idle is eerily quiet since the fans aren't running. Once the thermostat opens, both fans kick on and cool the radiator down. I didn't touch the temp setting on the controller. AC performance at idle is great (although it was only about 80 when I tried). Driving impressions are much better- especially after driving around for 2 weeks with a completely engaged fan clutch. I've tracked every gas fill up since I've owned it, so it'll be interesting to see if there are any improvements there.

I'm about a week into having the fans installed. I'm really liking them. Acceleration from a stop is much peppier- I feel like I'm using the same amount of throttle but I'm not getting smoked by the car in the other lane.

I haven't filled up, but I've got 278 miles on the tank. The DTE lie-o-meter says I have 154 miles to go still. The gas gauge indicates 3/8 of a tank remaining. Now the DTE has occasionally said I can get over 400 miles on a tank- but it's usually like 410 miles, and that's only initially. I've almost drained the tank and its still expecting me to get 430 miles. Truth will come will I fill up.

AC performance is great. It used to suck in stop and go traffic. Now it blows cold no matter what.

The electric fans made a big change on AC at idle?

Tom, my only concern is if its running too cold, will that be a problem with your cats heating up enough to burn off the fuel OK.

The engine is still cycling the thermostat the same- it’ll still get up to 204 while stopped before cooling down to 192. On the highway, it only gets to 197 or so (that I've seen). The exhaust temp should not be changing.

The AC would work fine before- while on the highway. When I was stopped in traffic, it woild heat up. If I shifted to neutral and revved the engine, it would cool down.

Now the electric fans give me cold AC at idle.

That's cool. It's amazing as much as the fans cost you, they would have put the right brackets in the box. It's always something Tom. We're you able to get credit for the clutch fan?

Will you keep posting for a while regarding these fans? I would like to do it but I'm concerned about slow speed off-roading and water. Thanks

I'll keep this updated.

I don't do a whole lot of low speed 4wheeling, but if the fans are working, they should provide more cfm of air flow through the radiator than the mechanical fan at low speed.

And as far as water, the efans can be turned completely off (I didn't wire in a switch, but I could pull the main fuse for the fans). Can't do that with a mechanical fan.

going down this road so looked into it & gonna start another thread for 1st gen tranny temps options

my 98 runs a 4R100, looks like most folks go this way with a sender

this thread for 97 f350 sez the built in sensor is in the solenoid pack

forscan works with that here

in the above link, dude got Torque Pro working on a 96

here's the argument for taking temps from the tranny pan

I'm going to also run an Autometer trans temp gauge on the cooler exit line. I don't have that wired up just yet.

I spent a small fortune in plumbing adapters. But the 6.0 cooler has larger nipples than the Expedition lines.

I'll update with my observations.

Edit:
This is the upgraded Hayden cooler that replaced the factory cooler:

Watching this/ thanks for the heads up, ExplorerTom.

I'd also like to add that I really enjoyed your recent photos of the Ouray area. We haven't been for a few years, and the last trip was in the old LR Discovery. We're putting consideration as to where we may go camp in the next month or so before the weather starts to turn, but I doubt that back to Ouray/ Silverton will make it into the final selection.

Ouray is quite the haul down there. There are plenty of great places to camp between here and there. I'm probably going to hit up the South Park area this weekend. There's a meteor shower going on.

Well I filled up. The results weren't as good as I thought they were going to be. 14.4 MPG. Which is pretty good, but I've done as good or better with the mechanical fan. But I'll keep keeping track of all fill ups and see the long term effects. My latest 10 fillup average is 13.2 and my overall (193 fill ups) is 13.0.

However, I still wouldn't go back to the old fan. The throttle response is so much better now. The butt dyno says there is definite increased get-up-and-go. AC performance is greatly improved. Haven't found a downside yet (other than initial cost).

Last year we spent a few days NW of Woodland Park, and ran a number of the trails that extend down beyond Divide, a majority of it in the burn off.

We would really like to relocate out near Ouray/ Silverton, or even Durango, but we have a son with Autism that is just settling in well with new therapies, so we'll likely remain here in the 'Springs for the next year or so at least.

The butt dyno is all that matters

Agreed - less drag on an aging engine is never a bad thing, and it has to translate to a positive when on the trail. Improved mileage or not, my primary interest is cooling while at low speed

Well, finally got the Mishimoto all aluminum radiator installed today. It was on back order for about a month. I probably added a gallon of coolant over the course of that month as it slowly leaked out.

Install was fairly straightforward. I did need to trim the fan shroud some, but it was fairly minor.

Quality piece for sure.

It's no bigger than the radiator that was in there.
791F35BA-F916-4289-8CDA-42B487CCC472.jpg

Hopefully this one won't leak. If it does, it has a lifetime warranty. And I'm keeping the old one for awhile. Just 'cuz.

Is this Mushimoto part# MMRAD-MUS-05 (https://www.mishimoto.com/ford-mustang-aluminum-radiator-performance-05.html) for the mustang? according to ford fiche, the 8005 radiator is used for expeditions and mustangs.
I have a 2007 XLT, basic, nothing fancy, just have a pinhole in the plastic that can't keep pressure and have to drive with loose overflow cap.

Oh wow.

This is what I used:

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/121997646683

So far so good, and I wish I had bought it earlier.

Tom - Disregard the below. I just didn't make it far enough in your thread! Just now got to the cooler install.

Thanks again.

...

Hey guys, where are you mounting these trans coolers? Are you putting fans on them? I just discovered my trans was replaced by the first owner, and I'm thinking it might be related to poor cooling. We're both in southern California and do long road trips.

Also - where do you put the temp sensor?

Any insight would be sweet.

FYI I'm looking at this ($100) and the Diesel one mentioned ($300).

Cheers

Got an alignment today to correct the front end after cranking the torsion bars to their max to compliment the Supreme Suspension coil spacers in the back.

Pics to come later.

I'm liking the ride. The Expedition before felt more like my mom's Cadillac than a truck. Now with the factory keys maxed out, it rides stiffer- and I like it.

Hey Tom - can I do this same simple lift if I have the stock air suspension?
