If combustion gases are present in the coolant it wouldn't hurt to have an oil analysis done. The diesel industry uses these to check for issues before they damage an engine. Usually they run 20 - 30 bucks. If you decide to have one done you will get a long list of items checked. For coolant I think you look at the amount of silicates in ppm.
If it is low then the lubrication side hasn't been compromised. If it has plan on a rebuild.

Don't fret untill you get results. Push come to shove, you change the gaskets and a few other items, and change them out. The trick is you don't wait forever, or then you'll need a whole motor. Do as Stamp says, and send your oil sample to Blackstone labs, let them analyse it. Your probably ok, so don't worry, be happy! My first car, the motor was in 3 boxes, I had to figure out at 17 years old how to put it back together, and make it run.

If you have coolant / oil mix the lubrication properties of the oil go out the window. Water sucks as an engine lubricant and doesn't provide a coating on the rotating parts. Normally all the rotating mass is suspended on a thin film of oil so that there isn't metal to metal contact when running. Throw in some coolant and you get contact as in the pic:

This takes the bearings out and increases wear on all components and possibly trashes them. This is why you stop and engine that is mixing oil & coolant.

This is what they look like when new:

Wierd thing is everything seems good I drive it rarely. When I do it’s long distance with kids watching dvds and freezing with ac on always drives fine but heat can be cold some times from air getting in coolant when I stop it gets cold sometimes even after vacuum the system that’s why I checked with die should just head head gaskets done or start with sending oil in

One of life's turning points. The old girl needs several thousand in work. Replace the head gasket, and all the stuff that you can get at while you're doing it, or put in a rebuilt motor. Or say goodbye.

I had that choice to make with my 2000. The head gasket was leaking oil and anti-freeze outside of the engine with 235,000 miles.

The job is heavy on labor, so if you have cheap labor rates there, you may consider doing it. I just put some sealer in mine, that got me through a year before the entire rear suspension rusted out. And my truck was clean and in very good shape.

Make a good assessment of this thing before you spend big money. Make sure you're not throwing good money after bad. Get some prices - new gaskets vs. rebuilt motor and decide what's best for your wallet.

I feel your pain, my friend.

Sorry to hear about the head gasket failure. Are you experienced enough to do the job yourself? Or are you looking at outside labor? Like Trainmaster said, you've got to weigh your options on quality of the rest of vehicle. If it's a rust bucket, you cut your losses, if it's sound, you look into possibly fixing it. Me, I hate deep sixing any vehicle. I've always enjoyed keeping a vehicle out of the wreckers. Hopefully you'll be able to keep it going, maybe a good low mileage motor to swap in.
