Our 2015 navigator is at the dealer for a few things. One of them is an odd rattle coming from the rear. It is most apparent while braking going downhill and hitting some bumps. The wierd thing is that it sounds like an empty trailer/shopping cart banging around but I'm not towing anything.

The dealer has been stumped. They've checked all suspension and took apart the rear hatch. They will start pulling exhaust shields next.

Does anyone have any clue what this could be? I don't have rear air suspension but I do have the ford CCD suspension.

The ebrake could still work, but if one of the small shoe springs popped loose or a hold down pin, it still will expand out, but cause the racket your hearing. It would sound like ball bearings rattling around in a coffee can.

This literally sounds like metal cages banging around similar to an unloaded trailer. It's pretty embarrassing lol

Noises are funny things. Not saying you're laughing though. I heard one case (on Click and Clack) where a golf ball fell into the body somewhere and bounced around. I've had this odd noise on my 2003 forever. I think I recently figured out the hood doesn't latch tight and that's it.

When you figure out what it is make sure you tell us.

You sure it's not the hatch itself? There should be spring-loaded anti-rattle spacers on each side. If one spring is broken, the hatch will make all sorts of sounds.

They said they took the hatch apart and checked everything. It really doesn't sound like something from the hatch though. It's truly a metal cages like a dog kennel banging around sound

Shoulda jumped around in the back and tracked it down

Stealership will make a mess of things and probably charge an arm and a leg. Unless you still got warranty?

Here's a thought: spare tire or something in the tools compartment

Can you elaborate more on when you hear the noise? More thorough description. Happens every time? Repeatable at will?

I had a strange rattle, had them check at my last oil change and the service writer immediately said "heat shield" when I described it to him. Sure enough it was. They replaced a bracket and the sound is gone.

Just fixed a rattle on mine. It was the exhaust pipe heat shield just barely touching the plastic spare tire shroud. It only rattled at low rpms, like at idle or backing up.

Dealership called yesterday. They said a heat shield was hitting the catalytic converter causing the noise. They also replaced both iwe and fixed a noise in the headliner all under bumper to bumper warranty. The brake pedal would get rock hard 2-5 minutes after shutting the car off. After replacing the iwe's they said it stopped doing that.

The rattle noise was most apparent with the windows down, going downhill, braking and hitting some bumps. The iwe noise occurred in 4th gear at low rpms (1100-1200) after the torque converter locked. Our neighborhood street was downhill so it shifted to 4th and locked the converter but then we have a long uphill section. The trans wouldn't downshift and the truck would chug up the hill at those rpms (20mph speed limit). This caused the iwe to make a grinding noise.
