Well.....it’s OUT! 2 hours for a 2 bolt alternator....took out the air box and coolant fans and moved a few wires and hoses...I didn’t pull the right front tire splash shield. Once both bolts were out I still couldn’t budge it so a few taps with a hammer helped it out. I’m just a DIYer and I was able to get it out....reinstall will be next weekend.

Seems like you did a little extra work:

Service Manual: CHARGING SYSTEM Print Date: 4/28/2019
2012 Ford Expedition 5.4L Eng VIN 5

1. Disconnect the battery.
2. For Navigator, release the 2 retainers and remove the engine cover.
3. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) intake pipe.
4. Rotate the Front End Accessory Drive (FEAD) belt tensioner counterclockwise and position the
accessory drive belt aside.
5. Remove the harness locator from the generator bracket.
6. Remove the 4 bolts and the generator bracket. (To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in)).
7. Remove the 2 bolts and position the generator aside. (Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft)).
8. Disconnect the generator electrical connector.
9. Position the generator B+ protective cover aside, remove and discard the nut, then position the
generator B+ terminal aside.
10. Install a new B+ terminal nut and tighten to 17 Nm (150 lb-in).
11. Remove the generator.
12. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

I like the way Ford still call the alternator a generator. Wasn't it 1964 or so that Ford switched to an alternator. I guess in theory it is an alternating current generator. Are the 3rd gens that tough to remove? Aparently. When I changed mine on my 2000 about 10 months back, toughest part was pulling the wiring plugs. Heat and 18 years made them a bit tough to yank.

yep...Exporer it is, still seems like a lot of work just to get an alternator out. You should see what the OEM's have done with the starters on the new semi's. Suckers are stuck inside the frame rail on some of them. All in the name of mpg....

Exploder below:

Service Manual: CHARGING SYSTEM Print Date: 4/28/2019
2012 Ford Explorer 3.5L Eng VIN 8 Base

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION > GENERATOR - 3.5L TI-VCT > REMOVAL
1. NOTE: The radial arm adapter is a serviceable item. Do not replace the generator if the radial arm adapter is the only concern.

Disconnect the battery. REFER to BATTERY DISCONNECT .

2. Remove the cooling fan motor and shroud. REFER to COOLING FAN MOTOR AND SHROUD - 3.5L TI-VCT .
3. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and position the accessory drive belt aside.
4. Position the generator B+ terminal protective cover aside, remove the nut and position the generator B+ terminal aside. To install, tighten to 17 Nm (150 lb-in).
5. Disconnect the generator electrical connector.
6. Remove the RH fender splash shield. REFER to FENDER SPLASH SHIELD .
7. Fully loosen the generator bolt. To install, tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
8. Remove the generator stud nut. To install, tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
9. Remove the generator stud and the generator. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).

Sorry, after I hit post on my phone, I saw the part of the post that said Explorer. Man, and we think the Expeditions and F150's are a pain to wrench on, Ford just ups the difficult factor by 2. What's next, pull the motor or front end to do a simple maintenance? Soon it will be like working on a Ferrari or other high end exotic. $2,000 for basic services.

Wait till the engines come with hour clocks and expiring certifications. Like aircraft.

Along with that will come requirements to file drive plans, DL endorsements to drive in rain, snow, fog, etc, and driver log books.

My son has a 2006 Escape. His alternator went out late last week. It is FWD, so the engine is sideways. The alternator in on the bottom in back. I've never paid for an alternator change before, but you have to remove the axle and much of the suspension to even get to it. I towed it home from where it died, charged it up overnight, and dropped off at the mechanic. Not my favorite design.
