Background, looking at purchasing a 2016 Ford Expedition for towing a family RV. Need to know how much the Expedition with the twin turbo ecoboost with 3.31 gears can tow. What is the towing capacity for this vehicle?

Hi Matthew, welcome to the forum!
Pg. 22 of the attached link should help. Depends if your Expy is a 4x2 or 4x4, and if it is equipped with the optional trailer HD Towing Pkg.
To determine the latter, if your Expy you're interested in has a factory-installed 7-pin electrical towing connector, a separate tranny cooler in front of the radiator, and a factory electric brake control for your trailer below the dash, it probably came with the HD towing package. With the VIN though, your Ford dealer should be able to confirm all of this.

Do yourself a future favor and DON'T BUY an expedition with 3.31 gears regardless of trailer size. When evaluating a full size vehicle for tow purposes, even occasional, always always always get the lowest offered factory gears, in this case you'll want 3.73 and HD tow package (which includes both 4 and 7pin plugs, factory integrated brake controller, and larger oil and transmission radiators). Bcsn it be done with 3.31,sure, but no doubt the 3.73 does it better and will stop you from upgrading out of it earlier than planned. Don't be fooled by mpg difference either, the 3.73 geared trucks get within 1mpg or less of the taller geared 3.31 and you'll never say you wish you had less towing power.

HD tow package expeditions with 3.73 gears are rated to tow 9300 pounds max, but you'd want to stick to 6-8k pound range for safety margin.

I pull a 7000lb (wet), 31 ft trailer with my 2017 Expedition using WDH. Plenty of power for hills and such. Gets a bit squirrely in the wind, but this could be tires too. I usually drive between 55 and 65 depending on wind. Any higher than 65 and fuel economy plummets. I get between 8 and 10 mpg at these speeds. The payload limits the vehicle to this trailer weight, as there is only ~1650 of payload before the travel trailer gets hitched, and the hitch weight consumes most of it. The 9K+ tow is a pipe dream if you have any passengers or a high cd. Maybe if it's a load of bricks you could get near it, but not with a long travel trailer.

My TT weighs in at 3500 for trips. 2014 Expy LTD, 3.73 gearing has full HD tow pkg. Avg a solid 12 mpg even pulling in NW mountains. I also installed a WDH with built in antisway.

Which WDH do you use?

Here are the numbers from my last trip to the scale. I have since added more weight on the front axle, but I think the numbers were close to where they needed to be. I may stop at the scale again since we're towing this weekend.IMG_20190613_182947972.jpg
