Honest report that most of you won’t believe but that’s ok. I bought my truck with 63,000 miles on it from a Ford dealer in Texas three years ago. I currently have 146,000 miles on it now. When I bought the truck, the dealership had installed brand new BFG KO2’s on it. I’ve never changed the tires. I rotate them, run them at around 50 psi and that’s about it. So I have around 83,000 miles on these tires. They are done. And need to be replaced pretty much as soon as possible. But here’s the kicker:

I tow my truck behind my tour bus all year long while on tour. I haven’t exactly calculated how many miles that has been over the past three years, but I do know that I average around 15-20,000 miles a year on my bus. And I am towing my truck for every single one of those miles. So, averaging on the low end of my calculations, my original BFG KO2’s have well over 100,000 miles on them. I’ve off-roaded on rock terrain with these tires, they’ve seen snow and mud, 114° in Arizona and -28° in Michigan. I haven’t been easy on them...and yet they’ve been faithful to me. So, I’ll be getting another set shortly. Here’s a pic I took today:

Those are well beyond what I would consider safe usage, but still a great run nonetheless. I had 2 sets of the original KOs and only got about 30-35K out of each set before they hit 2/32".

That’s about 2/32nds.

I had the original KOs. They sucked in snow but were decent on anything else. And I offroaded the piss out of them.

Currently running Cooper Discoverer ATP (Discount Tire exclusive- they look like the AT3 tire). I’ve got about 40k miles on them. They are wearing well but I’ve been looking at what to replace them with. I know a ton of people who gush over the KO2s. Might have to give them a try.

It's not just the tread, but the deteriorating rubber. If I was dirt poor, sure I would keep driving on them until there's nothing left. Otherwise, I want tires with a deep enough tread that I can rely on them in rain, snow, mud, etc. and rubber that's not going to start shedding chunks on me. At 2/32" or less it's not going to take a heck of a lot to cause hydroplaning even with a tire like the KO2.

I prefer to act like I am dirt poor in many areas...then maybe I might move further and further away form dirt poor.

I would run those a lot longer in CERTAIN circumstances.
They are getting near the end of what I would want to put on the highway at 60-75 MPH but I would have no problem whatsoever running them around town or short jaunts on the freeway just like my occasional 10-12 minute 2-3 exit hop on and off around here.

Would be good spare for that or other vehicle with similar size to.

I rarely even buy new tires for my personal vehicles anymore.
I get used take offs from friends that work at tire place or pick them up cheaply on Craigslist or FB marketplace.
Tires are a BIG rip off and have gotten ridiculous over the past 15 or so years.
GOne up a lot more than other things and even "inflation" which is a crock.

This mentality or "everything goes up" and rationalizing it is BULL and allows it to happen more and more.

I get milk cheaper now that I did in 1992. I can still get an orange in peak season for $.25.
Don't even get me started on TVs.
Oh wait already did.
We paid in the 1000s for 21-25 inch console tvs in the 70s and 80s+ and had to fix them 2-3 times over the years to "get our money's worth".

Technology and automation doesn't always bring prices down. TV manufacturing has obviously come WAY down for the companies and they decided to go with volume over high ticket low volume.
Remember in the old days each house had only 1 tv...then 2-3 per house and then overy office, waiting, room..sports bars with 20+....VOLUME.

If tv makers were like SOME companies today...they would have monopolized amount 2-3 makers and kpt prices high or even raised them because look at how much better they are now. Plasma went theis way for a few years but never came mainstream....Maybe they tried it and it didn't work so they said we will just sell 8 to every one expensive one.

But anyway...tires and shingles were "allowed" to go sky high because they JUSTIFIED it with the rising oil prices....you remember....the first time gas shot way up.
Back when gas was directly proportionate to the price of brent crude oil.
It peaked at what around 160 a barrel and then just a short while later was at 60!!
Cheaper than when Reagan was in office IF you adjust for inflation...almost still even if you don't adjust. I remember when it topped 40 a barrel and they thought that was terrible.

SO they cranked up rubber tires and asphalt shingles even more and they have never gone down.
We almost has some cheap chinese and would have been korean imports too but right after they came in and almost got awareness, the US companies got the govt to put a HUGE tariff on them so no good deal anymore.
Imports and tariffs gets into a different discussion though.
But tires--something you roll around on the ground to get dirty and wear our are a rip off.

They convince- and so many fall for it- that it isn't bad....you get 4-6 years or more out of a set and if you divide price by that it is not bad at all.
Why don't you rationalize mattress prices while your are at it!!!
"Average person keeps mattress8-10 years... so divide."" NO YOU DON'T !!!!!
YOU DO FRICKING NOT DIVIDE BY ANYTHING!

That is rationalizing to make it sound ok or better.

If a mattress in general used to be 129.00 and now it is 399.99 min IT IS A RIP OFF!

Machines and volume of production (over 327million now) should have brought prices DOWN or at least stopped such growth.
When you make a certain profit margin on each item and you can increase your production (and still sell) 6 times what you used too....you can even lower your price adn still make lots more money!
GREED GREED GREED!

This is why tires, shingles, and mattresses are so expensive. None of it is proportionate to what the costs and profits were previously----AND most just accept it and go on buying them.
GUESS WHAT???
NOT ME! I have not bought either in many years. I push further and further away all I can.

I only buy oranges when they are in season and cheap, not the same size one for $.60 like they often are.

I don't buy grapes when they are 2.49 or higher...some people just buy them when they walk into the grocery...I can't even FATHOM that!!!!
I buy toilet paper by cost per square foot - AFTER - if meets my qualifications- meaning I don't buy Scotts original or copies of.

I only over pay (which most people just call it buying) 2 items. Heinz Ketchup and Paul Mitchell Super Clean Styling Gel. There are no substitutes!

I did just 2 days ago pay full price for some Sun chips gargen salsa flavor. A rip off at full price stamped on bag of 3.29 when tons of other chips in bigger bags for 2.00....BUT I accidentally tried a handful of these about 5 weeks ago and THEY ARE YUMMY. Best chip I've ever eaten. Luckily I am not a chip person so I will probably not buy another bag ever or maybe in 9 months to a year. I eat candy and chocolate and brownies etc and fruit not chips.

NOW I ALWAYS overpay RIP off prices for food because I eat out everyday, usually twice with weekday lunches.
I have decided, If I would quit eating or even just eating out, in 2-3 years I would be almost wealthy...financially independent even..
If you don't believe me I welcome you to tell me what your def of almost wealthy or financially independent is and let's do the math. It's bad, trust me.

But I THOROUGHLY enjoy- I LIVE- to eat out! I GET NOTHING- no enjoyment from new tires. I kind of like the smell when they are less than a month or so old but come on.

Not my dance!

You went way, way off the reservation again. :D Nonetheless, I am a very frugal person so I get it. I tend to go for what I perceive to be the best value in a given market rather than the cheapest, but I'm obsessive about saving as much as possible. Prices of goods have gone up far, far more than income has, so I don't consider it acceptable either. Nonetheless, it is what it is and we have little control over it outside of shopping as frugally as we can.

I always go off of it.I don't even live on the reservation. Lol The other night I had a different forum kick my post out because it exceeded the character limit. Care to guess what character limit is? Wonder if this forum has a character limit?? Challenges hmmm.

Anyways, what you said about it is what it is is true for the current time but sometimes I feel we is a consumer cool play into things and I giving in too easily we allow a current increase pricing Trend to become the norm. Look at my example on TVs, they could have kept prices exactly where they were in the 80s and we would be happy to get larger screen thinner lighter TVs with better pictures then we had back then. We wouldn't even know that they could sell us these TVs for 200 to $300.

But then you have other things like trendy electronic devices manly cell phones and then Firearms where they charge many times over what they have in production. They work on a huge profit margin with multiple people marking the price often.
Firearms are getting a lot better I will say. Competition has driven the price down to record lows and the record keeps dropping. I actually just saw my first Glock on sale for 399. That is a bargain for a Glock. Big Lots first came on the market back in the late 80s early 90s the best you could get a Glock 19 for was 459.
They have been right around $500 at least on sale for 499 for a long time now. So back to my point and everything goes up. But the simple rules I mentioned earlier of the numbers... Firearms manufacturers are selling so many more firearms in the past 20 years than they did in the previous 20 or 40 years that just by numbers alone they don't need to make as much of each sale. The sales just keep coming and coming.
So it kind of frustrates me that I everything works by the same rules and theories.
No, we can't change it insulate or just for ourselves but I refuse to buy the $0.60 oranges!
I refuse to buy those overpriced tires but occasionally I will get a good deal on a vehicle and have extra money in my pocket over what I was expecting to pay for it or the seller comes down so I will bite the bullet and buy some good ones and I am like you very frugal. I will shop and get the absolute best price and value I can.
For instance, and I forgot about this when I made my post about haven't bought a new tires in a long time... I recently bought a super clean Navigator with low miles. I got it for a few hundred less than what I was willing to pay and the tires are pretty much shot on it. Only one had perfect red but it was an original spare that they had put on the vehicle and it was old and had some check ring on it so not a tie you want to run all the time.
I found me some Michelin LTX MS which are very expensive tires off and pushing $200 a piece online for $104 each shipped to my door. That's a deal for those tires. So even though it frustrates me to pay $100 for something that's Rubber and runs around the ground gets dirty and where is out, I was saving about 65 to 80 bucks per tire.
But mostly I'm just scrounging around for old used sub $40 tires or freebies that my friends gave me when people go in and buy all four new tires when they really only needed to or something like that but they have the money to spend.

My goal though is to ***** about things enough and to bring awareness and maybe get a few other people on my bandwagon of cheapness. If we can get enough support then maybe some retailer or producer will take notice. Maybe not, but it makes me feel better.
Some people care about Humanity, human rights, the environment, our future. All I care about is my bottom dollar low prices and top companies following the rules they've already established.

I have the 22" rims with the pirelli run flat tires. I was looking for a replacement but the michelins do not have the load rating of the pirelli tires. It came with 285x45x22. Anyone know of a replacement tire than would last and is comfortable to ride. I guess it is possible Ford sacrificed comfort for load rating with these tires. The Michelin Defender does not have the load rating but I have not been towing anything heavy.

Love the Cooper ATP's, am currently running them on my F250 and will be putting them on the Expedition when the time comes.
Have run BFG's before they don't compare to the ATP's anywhere (my opinion of course) BFG's chunk easier in rocky situations (Big Bear Ca area), haven't lost a bit of the ATP's and they do better in the Ca desert sand. And they are less pricey than the BFG's.
Have had the ATP's for three years, drive the truck everyday (rotate them regularly) and to the desert (260 round trip) as often as possible and they still look great. Again just my opinion.

Those are my old tires. Still haven’t gotten around to replacing them with my new ones yet. On the road a little too much at the moment.

The coopers look nice to me, 0d52d949ea188a1411f1d9b044559f34.jpgbut I just can’t help to continue to run a tire that I’ve had on multiple vehicles and proven itself in the absolute harshest of conditions. It’s a BAJA champion tire and a lot of competition trucks use it. I love my BFG’s.
