I have heard of people going to Rotella because of this. It is engineered to be a diesel oil. The additive packages (Not just ZDDP) are going to be different because of this. If I recall, the biggest difference is in the type and amount of detergents used.
Like I said, do your own research and make your own decisions.

Rotella sounds heavy duty but it's not for gas engines like Greg said. Don't use it, you wouldn't use GM transmission oil in your Ford would you?...………….bad idea.

You must not have read previous posts.

We are discussing oil w high levels of ZDDP for flat tappet engines not modern engines.

Not for use in catalytic converter engines and Expeditions depending on year is either 5-20 or 5-30. Again, you say you own a 2000 Expedition yet this particular forum is on the modern EB ...why not stick to what you know? If someone were to ask about oils in a 2000 that would be right up your alley.

The amount of incorrect info in this thread is amazing!

I don’t even want to start.

FYI - Rotella has a Gas formulated oil. It is getting really good reviews and test results.

Also, Diesel oils can be used in gas motors as long as they meet the standards that motor requires. Most of the time it is a waste, because diesel oils typically cost more. They need additional additives to deal with sheer and other unique diesel needs, like dissolving solid particulate matter.

One statement was made above...and is by far the most accurate in the whole thread.

Any premium brand made oil will do fine if changed regularly.

Generally a blended oil will last longer that 100% Dino, and synthetic will last longer than a blended. Even modern Dino oils can go WAY past the 3K of olden days.

If you have an oil life display, listen to it. It factors MANY things into its calculation, including start cycles, idle time, average length of drive, average speed, date(how long since last oil change), ambient temp and several other things.

If you are changing your oil every 3K and aren’t in a harsh environment constantly flogging or towing, you are just wasting money...that is all.

My point is that Rotella is formulated for diesels and why even bother with it when there are plenty of dependable big name gas engine oils out there? Why are we even talking about it?

Just correcting the incorrect information above. That is all.

I agree most diesel oils would be overkill and pretty much said that above....

I think you are dreaming about all those calculations it makes  I think it only calculates time and miles of which I don't need either.

Nope. Takes many factors in to play.

Many useless factors which I doubt anyway. I use my odometer to change oil in multiples of 5k and it's all anybody needs.:33:

You keep doing it your way...all good. Mine average between 5 and 7K using the sensor, because of short trips and idling(Remote Start).

Try the odometer method it's really simple and fool proof. I wish the former owner of this truck I bought a month ago had opted for the remote start instead of some of the other stuff he got. I am glad he got the bench seat in the second row though.

I have oil changes for free at the dealer for the life as long as I own it. So I take it in when it says it needs it. Pretty simple. I could do it myself, but they do it for free, wash it, vacuum it, and rotate the tires. No brainer for me.

Never liked the captain chairs in the 2nd row either. Had to look for a while to find my 15 limited without the captains chairs and the other bells and whistles I wanted.

When the 15 was totaled we were damn lucky to find the 17 with basically the same options. Wife loves it, and I don’t see it going anywhere anytime soon!

The whole Rotella subject came up a couple pages back w comments about oil for flat tappet motors. Some idiots comment wo reading or being aware of the context.

Diesel engine oils have more zinc which is important to prevent sheer w flat tappet motors. ZDDP is the additive as well as having more cleaning additives.

Again, only relevant to flat tappet motors and a previous comment. :banghead:

That's silly.
Rotella is excellent oil to use in many modern gasoline engines.

Obviously you know everything about oil and have determined you know the best way to deal with oil type/brand/weight/classification/changes....

Yous could have just said..."I never knew diesel oils were good for gas engines" and learned something instead of continually trying to shoot down any other comments that don't agree with yours s being wrong, or overkill, cumbersome, waste of time etc.

I know very little about diesels so therefore I don't really like them. I stay away from them because not my wheelhouse.
Most info given about diesels would be a learning time for me since I know very little about them to start with.

Not afraid to admit it. But back to oil....Rotella and diesel oils jsut fine and some even better for gas engines...Just accept it and move on.

But who cares? This is a gas engine forum and rotella is for diesels so why pay more to use it? Nobody knows what's really in those oils so why bother with it? Again their are plenty of gas engine oils out there so just move on. Oh! maybe 2 stroke oil, that might be better....…..lol. I heard they put a lot of good stuff in it...…..lol:emotions34:

People on here who don't want mis-information spread. They care.

Plenty of people know exactly what's in any oil you want to choose. Plenty of data sheets available and independent lab analysis or virgin oils.

We also talk about escalades and Navigators on here...even mustangs and corvettes. Yet it's not a GM or car/performance car forum.

Actually very little is known about oil except for the people that made it like many things that are a mixture in this world. Try the 2 stroke oil, I heard it's really good ………..lol. Don't be dumb, stick with gas engine oil.
Still incorrect. Have you not looked at Blackstone lab report for a virgin sample of motor oil??
I know it's easy and simple just to say stick with a gasoline oil which is fine and a good preference but please quit posting like there is something wrong with doing so just because you don't choose to do it.
